Colombia’s FARC rebels give up weapons
BOGOTA, Colombia — Colombia’s FARC rebels have handed over all their weapons in line with last year’s peace deal, the United Nations confirmed Monday.
The6,800 fighters have turned in all 7,132 previously registered weapons, the U.N. saidin a statement.
Fighters signed a statement saying they would not return to arms and would comply with the peace agreement.
The landmark deal includes rural reforms, joint action against drug trafficking, political participation of demobilized guerrillas and the creation of a system of transitional justice.
Colombia has been riven by internal conflict since the 1960s, as FARC and other leftwing rebels battled the military, police and right-wing paramilitaries.
EU fines Google $2.72B
BRUSSELS— European regulators fined Google a record 2.42 billion euros ($2.72 billion) for abusing its dominance of the online search market in a case that could be just the opening salvo in Europe’s attempt to curb the company’s clout on that continent.
Thedecision announced Tuesday by the European Commission punished Google for unfairly favoring its own online shopping recommendations in its search results.The commission is also conducting at least two other probes into the company’ s business practices that could force Google to make even more changes in theway it bundles services onmobile devices and sells digital advertising.
The penalty itself is unlikely to leave a dent in Google’s finances. Parent company Alphabet Inc. has morethan $92 billion (82 billion euros) in cash, including nearly $56 billion (50 billion euros) in accounts outside of the U.S.
Seventh journalist slain
MEXICO CITY — Over a month ago, a group of armed men forced television journalist Salvador Adame into a black SUV, local news reported. The abductors then fled the southern part of the gang-ridden Mexican state of Michoacán.
Weeks later, authorities found charred human remainsin a rural area known as “Barranca del Diablo,” or the “Devil’s Gorge.” Through DNA tests, authorities identified the body as Mr. Adame’s, Michoacán’s state prosecutor said Monday, making him the seventh journalist killed thisyear in Mexico, the deadliest country for journalists in 2017.
Gay marriage in Germany
BERLIN — The emotional issue of same-sex marriage moved swiftly to the center of Germany’s national election campaign Tuesday after Chancellor Angela Merkel softened her resistance, saying for the first time that she would allow members of her party to vote as they saw fit on the issue.
Ms. Merkel’s statement came after decisions by her current coalition partners, the Social Democrats — along with two other parties that may be part of her government after elections in September — made their support contingent on backing for same-sex marriage.
