Man fatally shot on porch in Perry South

-

A 47-year-old man was fatally shot late Friday in Perry South, Pittsburgh police said.

The incident occurred about 11 p.m. in the 2500 block of Maple Avenue.

A resident of the neighborhood who asked not to be identified said he heard gunshots in the area and found a man’s body lying on a porch.

Four people who refused to testify in a heroin distribution trial in federal court earlier this year on Friday pleaded guilty to contempt of court.

Khayri Battle, 36, of Newark, N.J., and Shane Brooks, 30, Victoria Morgan, 32, and Bobby Rodgers, 48, all of Duquesne, will be sentenced by U.S. District Judge Reggie B. Walton on Sept. 8. They could face a fine and incarceration.

According to the U.S. Attorney’s office, the four had been subpoenaed to testify in the trial of Anthony Pryor and Lance Yarbough, who were charged with running a large-scale heroin distribution ring between New Jersey and Pittsburgh.

The four witnesses refused to testify — even after being given a grant of immunity that would have protected them against being charged.

Pryor and Yarbough had a bench trial before Judge Walton in the winter, and he issued an opinion finding them guilty in June. They are scheduled to be sentenced in October. leave after a train derailment and resulting fires.

Tests on air quality led the railroad CSX, an incident management team and environmental specialists to decide that it was safe to reduce the evacuation zone to a limited area immediately surrounding the derailment site in Hyndman, a CSX spokesman said.

Most of the approximately 1,000 evacuated residents were being allowed to return as of noon Saturday. The remaining evacuation zone affecting about 30 homes is intended only to protect residents from the impact of site restoration activity, which would involve “heavy truck traffic, movement of derailed cars and other noisy, disruptive activity 24 hours per day,” the company said.

Thirty-two cars, some containing hazardous materials, derailed Wednesday morning as a train with five locomotives and 178 rail cars was heading from Chicago to Selkirk, N.Y. Cars containing liquefied petroleum gas and sulfur caught fire.

One house was practically sheared in half and a garage caught fire. No injuries were reported.
