Dolphins reach out to QB Cutler
By The Associated Press
Miami Dolphins coach Adam Gase said he reached out to Jay Cutler, and the retired quarterback who is now working in television showed interest.
But Gase said Saturday he didn’t think the Dolphins were close yet to signing a quarterback after the knee injury to Ryan Tannehill that could sideline him the entire season. Gase wants to determine Tannehill’s status before bringing in someone else.
“I know I need somebody either way; it’s just what role,” Gase said. “I’d like to know exactly with Ryan first, to be honest with you, so that helps me make a decision what direction I want to go.”
Tannehill, who missed the final four games of 2016 with two sprained ligaments in his left knee, reinjured it Thursday, a week into training camp.
An MRI was inconclusive, and the Dolphins are consulting with specialists to determine whether surgery is necessary, which likely would shelve him for the season. He’s expected to be out a minimum of six weeks.
Vikings
Minnesota agreed to terms with nose tackle Linval Joseph on a contract extension. Joseph, 28, becomes the latest Vikings defender to get paid and the latest that Minnesota has locked up long term. His four-year extension has a total value of $50 million with $31.5 million guaranteed. The dominant interior lineman is coming off a career year in which he made his first Pro Bowl with career-best marks in tackles (77) and sacks (4).
