Let’s Get Physical!

-

The Place: The Carnegie Science Center’s Highmark SportsWorks on the North Shore, Friday night

#LetsGetPhysical: The Science Center has been throwing very popular over 21+ night events for a while now, but nothing like this. “We’ve never opened the SportsWorks space up for just adults before,” said Connie George, senior director of marketing. “We are expecting about 600 guests tonight. We think they are really going to enjoy all of the interactive activities.” Those activities included a rock climbing wall, a monkey bike — that kept partygoers off balance with vision impairment goggles — dancing in the Robot Lounge to music by DJ Solo Dolo, laser karaoke, mindful meditation led by holistic health coach Jess Malingowski, pole fitness by Fitness with a Twist, an aerial silks class and much more!

But, what had people waiting in line? The relatively new rope course. “That’s why we’re here, we’ve never done this stuff before and we wanted to try it out,” said Stephanie Linscott with Jaek Cho, both recently moved here from Lancaster. “You have to get here early because we wanted to beat the crowd to do this,” said Katie Wozniak with friends Gina Doutz, Donya Shodja and Sarah Smith. Ms. Smith added, “It’s nice to be here without any kids. They can’t shame you for being way better at this than you,” she laughed.

Also zooming by were the women of the Steel City Roller Derby such as Heather Wood, Alivia Martin and Taylor Mervis who were giving demos on the moves in one of the classrooms and also spreading the word about the big 2017 International WFTDA D2 Playoffs, which is bringing teams in from all over the world next weekend. Next time, I’m leaving the cocktail dress at home and getting in on the fun!
