Safety Wilcox joins team in trade with Tampa Bay

- By Ray Fittipaldo

The Steelers made their fourth trade in the past six days Sunday, acquiring former Tampa Bay safety J.J. Wilcox and a 2019 seventhround pick in exchange for a sixth-round pick in next year’s draft.

Wilcox was a third-round pick of the Cowboys in 2013 and spent his first four NFL seasons with them. He signed a two-year contract with the Buccaneers in March.

The Steelers must make a corresponding roster move to get back to the leaguemandated 53-man roster limit.

The Steelers have some injury concerns at safety. Starting free safety Mike Mitchell has not practiced in a month after he was injured in the first padded practice of training camp. He told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette last week that he would be ready for the opener in Cleveland next Sunday.

Reserve safety Jordan Dangerfield injured an ankle in the final preseason game at Carolina. The Steelers have not provided an update onthe severity of his injury.

That left the Steelers with two healthy safeties for the first week of the regular season — starting strong safety Sean Davis and reserve Robert Golden. Cornerback Will Gay also has taken some snaps at safety in recent weeks.

In March, Wilcox signed a two-year deal worth $6.25 million with $3.12 million guaranteed. It’s not known at this time how much of the salary the Steelers took on.

Practice squad

The Steelers agreed to terms with 10 players for their practice squad. All 10 spent all or part of training camp with the team.

Running back Fitzgerald Toussaint, who has been on the 53-man roster the past two seasons, was signed back to the practice squad after the Steelers cut him Saturday. The other members of the initial practice squad are center Kyle Friend, tight end Jake McGee, receivers Marcus Tucker and Justin Thomas, linebacker Matt Galambos, safety Jacob Hagen, defensive end Lavon Hooks, linebacker Farrington Huguenin and cornerback Dashaun Phillips.

The players will earn a minimum of $7,200 each week they are on the practice squad.
