Pittsburgh trending at NYC Fashion Week

NEW YORK — Beyond the garments and glamour, Pittsburgh connections are trending this season at New York Fashion Week.
On the runway, models with local roots, like Matthew
of Scott, were in the spotlight. For a second consecutive season, he walked in the much-hyped Philipp Plein runway show, this time shirtless with the phrase “Good gone bad” scribbled across his chest in red. The edgy event attracted a star-studded crowd, although it was competing with another big celebrity draw, Alexander Wang's outdoor #wangfest in Brooklyn.
Behind the scenes, Casey Herman of Clinton helped prep models for the Dennis Basso 35th anniversary runway show. The New York City-based celebrity manicurist was the lead nail artist for the event at The Plaza Hotel's grand ballroom and attended by the likes of Ivana Trumpand Lisa Rinna.
Others from the 'Burgh used their time in the Big Apple to promote their brands. At TechStyle NYC, a showcase spotlighting some of the freshest companies that merge fashion with technology and sustainability, East Liberty-based Thread International shared the story of how their fabrics are made from recycled plastics harvested from streets and landfills in impoverished communities in Haiti and Honduras.
Also on display were other Pittsburgh brands that use Thread materials in their construction, including bow ties by Knotzland, custom textiles by Rebekah Joy and dresses, pillows, handbags and accessories by Kelly Lane Design. Another techy Pittsburgh tie at the event was The Ultimate Cuff, the brainchild of Anne Zacharias of Mt. Lebanon that offers a stylish cuff-style fine-jewelry band that can dress up the Apple watch and Fitbit.
While runway shows unfolded across Manhattan, theCURVYcon brought together some of the industry's leading brands, stylists, bloggers, media personalities and more for a body-positive experience, complete with shopping, fitness sessions and panels. Homegrown ModCloth was on site to share its wide selection of styles in a range of sizes.
Outside the shows, a number of Pittsburgh bloggers and stylists — Anna Maleeva, Christina Stein and Allyn Lewis — were turning the heads of streetstyle photographers. Who says Pittsburgh doesn't have style!
