Miami, Cutler bring down Patriots

-

Tom Brady was intercepted twice by Xavien Howard and held without a third-down conversion Monday night, and the Miami Dolphins snapped the New England Patriots’ eight-game winning streak with a surprising 27-20 victory.

The Dolphins (6-7) were 11- point underdogs at home, but they kept the Patriots (10-3) from clinching their ninth consecutive AFC East title — at least for another week.

Brady went 24 for 43 for 233 yards and one touchdown.

Miami sacked him twice and hit him five times, and held the Patriots to 25 yards rushing. New England was 0 for 11 on third downs.

The Dolphins’ Jay Cutler threw for 263 yards and three scores, including two to Jarvis Landry. Kenyan Drake had 114 yards rushing and 79 receiving. Eagles

An MRI Monday showed that quarterback Carson Wentz has a torn left ACL and he will miss the rest of the season and playoffs, forcing the NFC East Division champions to turn to Nick Foles to finish the year. Wentz was a favorite in the NFL MVP race in a breakout sophomore season. He threw for 3,296 yards and set a franchise single-season record with an NFL-leading 33 touchdown passes while only tossing seven interceptions. Wentz got hurt diving into the end zone on a scramble late in the third quarter Sunday at Los Angeles.

Players will not face any suspensions for the ugly melee that broke out at the conclusion of a loss Sunday to Jacksonville. “We don’t want to play like that. We don’t want to look like that ever,” Seattle coach Pete Carroll said. Michael Bennett, Sheldon Richardson and Quinton Jefferson were flagged for personal fouls. Jefferson and Richardson were ejected. Jefferson’s reaction was the most egregious as the defensive tackle attempted to climb into the stands after fans threw what appeared to be bottles of beer at him as he was leaving the field. He was pulled back by team staff.

Quarterback Tom Savage went back into a 26-16 loss Sunday to San Francisco after a hard hit from Elvis Dumervil in the second quarter left him dazed and his handsvisibly quivering, leading fans to fear he had suffered not only a concussion but a seizure. Coach Bill O’Brien said he didn’t see video of Savage shaking and didn’t even realize he had been hit by Dumervil because he was 50 yards away and blocked by players at the time. The medical staff and NFL officials responsible for making sure players stay healthy are facing scrutiny, withthe NFL and the NFLPA launching a joint investigation into whether concussion protocol was properly followed. League spokesman Joe Lockhart said the probe also will seek to find flaws in the process to lessen the chances of something like thishappening again.
