New year, new stores to shop Madeleine George: 5890½ Ellsworth Ave., Shadyside

- SARA BAUKNECHT

Looking to dull the January doldrums with some retail therapy? There’s a handful of new shops (and some existing ones that got an update) around Pittsburgh that can help.

From casual-chic womenswear to hip streetwear for him, check out some of the latest places to go to spruce up your style in Pittsburgh.

When you first step into this cozy boutique, you just might think you’ve been transported to New York City. Madeleine George oozes that cool-girl city vibe but with an approachable sensibility that makes it a perfect addition to Pittsburgh’s budding boutique scene.

Owners Stacy Cohen and Nicole Rabner have curated a sharp selection of versatile sweatshirts (the kind you can easily get away with wearing to the gym or a girls’ night out), flowy frocks and jeans so comfortable you’ll want to wear them out of the store (after you’ve bought them, of course). They’ve also got fun updates on ‘90s trends such as a leather fanny pack and sleek olive windbreaker jacket.

With a range of price points and styles, the joy of shopping is as important to the owners as what they’re stocking. They hope Madeleine George (a nod to their daughters’ names) will be a place where generations of women feel at home and find something that makes them feel extra fabulous.

The Vault: 5450 Penn Ave., Garfield/Friendship border

Refresh PGH is a destination for rare sneakers, as well as cleaning and customization. Now it’s stepping up its streetwear cred with The Vault, an extension of its existing Penn Avenue storefront.

Hoodies, tees, totes, hats and accessories by streetwear giants Supreme, Bape and Palace are its specialty. These are no everyday separates, though. A Bape graphic tee can easily run you more than $200, but these brands have the cult following to back them up. (Don’t worry, though. There are some more walletfriendly options.)

Patagonia Pittsburgh: 5509 Walnut St., Shadyside

At first glance, Patagonia’s Pittsburgh location may look like just another shop for outdoor gear and goods. Scratch the surface and you’ll discover that it’s got a lot to say about the great outdoors, particularly when it comes to fighting climate change, supporting renewable energy and correcting other environmental issues. (The company made headlines in December with its “The President Stole Your Land” message, a response to President Donald Trump’s announcement last year about reducing the size of Bears Ears and the Grand Staircase Escalantenational monuments.)

Beyond clothing, Patagonia cares about community. Its second-floor area has a nonprofit work space, and the store regularly includes collaborations with local businesses such as CommonwealthPress.

Gina Mazzotta Millinery at Uptown flagship: 5983 Broad St., East Liberty

Gina Mazzotta Millinery has left its Downtown studio in the Diamond Building for a space in East Liberty, where it’s in good company with otherhomegrown brands.

Hats by this Pittsburghbased designer are now for sale in the Uptown flagship store, which is also home to Kiya Tomlin (stylish sweatshirt dresses, jumpsuits and separates) and Sandra Cadavid (handbags and jewelry).

Milliner Gina Mazzotta offers ready-to-wear collections and custom pieces.
