Penn State streaks to defeat of Illinois

Shep Garner scored 16 points and Tony Carr added 15 to lead Penn State to a 74-52 victory at Illinois.

Illinois missed its first nine second-half shots as Penn State went on a 12-0 run to make it 49-36. The Nittany Lions (18-9, 8-6 Big Ten) led by at least nine points the rest of the way.

Lamar Stevens had 11 points and Mike Watkins and Josh Reaves scored 10 apiece for Penn State.

The Nittany Lions shot 54.5 percent from the field, and outscored Illinois 34-12 in the paint to win their fourth consecutiv­e game against the Fighting Illini (12-14, 2-11).

Women

Boston College 76, Pitt 61: Redshirt junior forward Yacine Diop became the 19th player in program history to record 1,000 career points as Pitt (10-15, 2-10 ACC) fell on the road at Boston College (7-18, 210). Diop had team highs of 22 points and 9 rebounds.

Minnesota 101, Penn State 68: Junior Teniya Page moved up two spots in the Penn State (14-12, 5-8 Big Ten) career scoring list with a 22-point effort in the loss to the Gophers (19-6, 8-4). She ended with 1,474 career points to sit No. 14 on the Penn State scoring charts, passing both Katina Mack and Jess Stromme.
