Those who cheer Trump should be worried instead
I am still reeling after seeing clips on TV of Donald Trump at a July 5 rally in Montana, which the Post-Gazette made no mention of. He was — as usual — boasting, bragging, bullying, slamming the legitimate news media, twisting the truth into tatters and, worst of all, uttering the meanest of racial, ethnic and sexist remarks. And the crowd was cheering.
I wonder how many of them or their relatives depend on Social Security, Medicare and/or welfare? They should worry instead of cheer!
Here’s a suggestion: Put Mr. Trump’s entire diatribe, unedited, on your front page. I have a theory that many people reading newspapers or watching the nightly news don’t see Mr. Trump in full fury, so they don’t understand how he’s altering our moralityas a nation. I find it terrifying.
And you can maybe win a Pulitzer Prize by reporting on just how many rallies he is doing, what he says at them, who is paying for them and who is running the country while he is out running his mouth. HELEN WILSON
Squirrel Hill with no young trees to replace them, our hillsides will be ever more vulnerable to slides and washouts, with potentially catastrophic results, up to and including serious deforestation. There are many historical examples of deforestation due to overgrazing, usually by domestic animals, but there is no reason the same effect couldn’t be caused by an overpopulation of wild deer. We could be in the beginning stages of such an event.
Itis clearly time for authorities to take a more aggressive stance toward controlling the deer population, which may include culling programs and also relaxing restrictions on landowners who wishto implement their own control measures, including possibly extending hunting seasons in areasthat are at risk.
It would be disastrous for our environment, both natural and built, and for our quality of life if we allowed our magnificent natural greenery to be damaged through inattention or a misguided aversion to controlling an animal population that has wildly exceeded any natural state it may once have had. Ross Ms. Parrish’s article and recipe: the brilliant comedy crime film “Miami Blues,” starring Alec Baldwin and Jennifer Jason Leigh. In the film, she bakes a vinegar pie for Mr. Baldwin’s character, and as they are in an argumentative point in their relationship, she purposefully pours an entire quart of vinegar into the bowl of pie ingredients. Of course, he dutifully eats his serving while fussing over just how delicious it is (not).
I appreciate your recipe. And your readers? Bakers will also enjoy the film. It was my introduction to vinegar pie! BEVERLY STUEBGEN
