‘This Is Us,’ ‘Mister Rogers’ retrospective in Emmy race

- emmys.com.

NBC’s partially Pittsburgh-set “This Is Us” repeated several of its top category Emmy nominations from a year ago, landing among the highly competitive outstanding drama series race and again placing two actors (Sterling K. Brown, Milo Ventimiglia) in the lead actor in a drama series category.

Outstanding drama series nominees also include FX’s “The Americans,” Netflix’s “The Crown,” HBO’s “Game of Thrones,” Hulu’s “The Handmaid’s Tale,” Netflix’s “Stranger Things” and HBO’s “Westworld.”

Filmed-in-Pittsburgh Netflix thriller “Mindhunter,” eligible for its first Emmy nominations, failed to land in any of the top categories. Actor Cameron Britton, who played serial killer Ed Kemper, was nominated for outstanding guest actor in a drama series.

“Mister Rogers: It’s You I Like,” a March PBS pledge special produced by Pittsburgh’s Fred Rogers Productions, received nominations in the outstanding documentary/nonfiction special and in the outstanding writing for a nonfiction program categories.

HBO’s “Paterno,” about the fall of Penn State coach Joe Paterno, received nominations for best movie and best director (Barry Levinson), but star Al Pacino did not receive a nomination.

Pitcairn native Don Roy King was again nominated for his work directing NBC’s “Saturday Night Live.” He has won seven times, including an Emmy last year.

Outstanding comedy series nominations went to FX’s “Atlanta,” HBO’s “Barry” and “Curb Your Enthusiasm,” ABC’s “blackish,” Netflix’s “GLOW,” Amazon’s “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel,” HBO’s “Silicon Valley” and Netflix’s “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt.”

Not surprisingly after Roseanne Barr’s racist tweet, ABC’s “Roseanne” revival did not pull in many nominations, but co-star Laurie Metcalf was nominated as best supporting actress in a comedy series, just as she was back in the ’90s during the show’s original run.
