Council proclaims day for top cop Farringer

- By Rita Michel

When O’Hara police Superintendent James Farringer hits the road to retirement after 40 years service, he likely will do so on three wheels, with a backward wave to his replacement, Sgt. ScottSlagel.

O’Hara council sang Superintendent Farringer’s swan song on July 3, just hours after he and othertownship officials pulled an all-nighter as a result of a flash flood that put the township into a stateof emergency.

Such stresses of the job will be left behind as he hops on the new Harley trike his wife bought him and cruises into retirement. The trike is new, but the superintendent has been an avid rider since high school, graduating from a Honda 350 to a 750, enjoying a couple ultra classic Harleys and now the trike. The police superintendent is a member of the Blue Knights Pittsburgh Law Enforcement Motorcycle Club.

Council proclaimed Monday, July 30 — his last day on the job — as Jim Farringer Day in the township.Council recognized:

• His service to the township since 1978;

• His rise through the department ranks, including his promotion to superintendent in 2005;

• His work as O’Hara emergency management coordinator since 1984;

• His 20-plus years as a fireman with Parkview Volunteer Fire Department/Emergency Management Service.

Superintendent Farringer also was lauded for helping
