Ill-fitting bra?

Bra Bridge is a quick fix invented by a Pitt graduate

One day Judith Samson looked in the mirror and did a double take: Was her bra really that ill fitting?

“It was so distracting,” she said, so she pinched her bra in the middle to pull the cups closer to each other. Something so simple made a big difference.

Ms. Samson turned that aha! moment into the Bra Bridge, a patent-pending piece of fabric with clips on each end that discretely attaches between the bra cups and pulls them together. A reduction in the appearance of bouncing, sagging and ill-fitting on the sides are some of the benefits customers have reported.

By day, Ms. Samson, 48, is a criminal defense attorney in Minneapolis. She attended law school at the University of Pittsburgh. Her husband is a patent attorney who helped her navigate the process of filing for one.

During the research phase, she noticed there wasn’t an accessory like Bra Bridge on the market, so she surveyed women, particularly other professionals in her field, to get feedback on her product and if they’d use it.

“Even with a proper bra fitting, some women can’t find the bra for them. Different brands fit in different ways, and everybody’s body shape is so different,” Ms. Samson says. “I wanted this to be an accessory that anybody can put into their favorite bra and get the look and feel they want. What we’ve found is that women are telling us that it’s almost their security blanket. Now they don’t leave home without wearing it.”

Bra Bridge is sold in a package of three for $ 19.95 at brabridge.com. Each includes a black, white and nude option to coordinate with a variety of bras. To keep the clip from showing through thinner clothing, Ms. Samson recommends flipping it over so the flat side of the clips are facing out.

Next on her agenda is designing “bling” options with some jewelry attachments to dress up a swimsuit or an outfit that shows a little more cleavage. She also hopes to get Bra Bridge in some big-box stores someday.

“I want this to become a product like SPANX that everybody recognizes,” she says. “That is my hope.”
