Man hit by pickup after getting off T

A man died after he was hit by a pickup truck Tuesday evening as he got off a light-rail vehicle on the Port Authority Red Line.

A Port Authority spokesman said the incident occurred about 5:30 p.m. near the stop at Broadway and Belasco avenues in Beechview.

The man was struck just as he stepped off the rail car. He was taken to UPMC Mercy in critical condition, where he later died.

The victim has not been identified. No charges had been filed by late Tuesday, police said.

The incident forced the closure of the Red Line in Beechview for about 2 1/2 hours.

CoGo’s employee injured in machete attack

ADelmont man armed with two machetes told police he stabbed a Greenfield gas station employee Tuesday because the man was casting spells on him, according to court documents.

The incident occurred about 1:30 p.m. inside the CoGo’s/Sunoco gas station at 4070 Beechwood Blvd., according to Allegheny County dispatch.

Police believe Thomas Byrne, 25, walked into the convenienc­e store and immediatel­y attacked the store’s assistant manager, 27-year-old Michael Weist.

Mr. Weist was stabbed several times and was transporte­d to a hospital in serious but stable condition, police spokeswoma­n Alicia George said.

Twocustome­rs, Tobias Colemandan­d Hunter Croft, wentbehind the counter and engagedMr. Byrne in a effort tostop the attack, according toa criminal complaint. Theyknocke­d Mr. Byrne to theground and were able to keephim pinned down until police arrived.

One customer suffered a minor injury during the struggle and was taken to a hospital to be evaluated, according to Pittsburgh police.

Mr. Byrne knew Mr. Weist, according to police, and told investigat­ors that he attacked Mr. Weist because the man was “casting multiple spells upon him.”

Mr. Byrne, who was not injured, was charged with aggravated assault and taken to the Allegheny County Jail. He is scheduled to have a preliminar­y hearing July 31.
