Eat breakfast pizzas, drink beer mimosas at BrunchBurgh

- By Rebecca Sodergren

Coffee porter, beer mimosas, iced matcha and customized omelet pizzas will be served alongside more traditional breakfast items like biscuits, doughnuts and coffee at a new festival for the city: BrunchBurgh.

Good Food Pittsburgh ran a Rise + Shine festival, focused mainly on local coffee vendors, last November. But the handful of food options at that event didn’t add up to quite enough food.

“People were still hungry,” Good Food Pittsburgh staffer Madeline Quigley said. Plus, “we just wanted to highlight more about Pittsburgh’s breakfast scene. There’s so much going on.”

Everyone who attends will get a Hitchhiker beer mimosa in a take-home cup, food and drink samples from some of the vendors, and a swag bag with coupons from vendors and food-related paraphernalia.

The event is set for 9:30 a.m. to noon Saturday at Hitchhiker Brewing in Sharpsburg. Tickets are $25.

Some of the food trucks and drink vendors will serve small samples. All vendors will bring special breakfast menus for a-lacarte sales.

The food vendors are Wise County Biscuits, Pittsburgh Juice Co., Pittsburgh Sandwich Society, Paul Family Farms, Pittsburgh Burrito Bus, Wood Fired Flatbreads (the breakfast pizza vendor) and Just Good Donuts (the doughnut seller inside South Side’s Pub Chip Shop).

Ms. Quigley expects Wise County Biscuits to bring much of its standard menu, including her personal favorite, “Sallie’s Snack,” a buttermilk biscuit topped with pimento cheese, fried egg and chow chow. Other biscuit sandwiches on Wise County’s menu include toppings such as fluffernutter (peanut butter and marshmallow whip), braised greens, bacon jam or breakfast meats.

Some of the vendors, like Pittsburgh Sandwich Society and Pittsburgh Burrito Bus, attend afternoon and evening events most of the time, so BrunchBurgh is a chance to think outside their boxes.

“It’s a creative outlet for these people,” Ms. Quigley said.

The drink vendors are Ispirare Coffee, Zeke’s Coffee Pittsburgh, De Fer Coffee & Tea, Ultra Matcha, Green Dragon Coffee Roasters, KLVN Coffee Lab, La Prima Roasters and Maggie’s Farm Rum.

Many of the drink vendors will bring cold brew and nitro options. Hitchhiker is releasing its new Imperial Coffee Porter for the event and Maggie’s Farm Rum is making breakfast cocktails.

This event is for ages 21 and up only. Information: goodfoodpittsburgh.com. Tickets: eventbrite.com (search for BrunchBurgh).
