Gunfight outside Greenfield Giant Eagle injures 2
Two people were in hospitals after a gunfight Friday afternoon in the parking lot of the Greenfield Giant Eagle.
The shooting was reported at 5:12 p.m. at the corner of Murray Avenue and Loretta Street. A man and a woman were wounded and sought refuge and assistance inside the grocery store at 4250 Murray Ave.
Both were in stable condition and were being interviewed by detectives, Pittsburgh Public Safety Director Wendell Hissrich said. No one inside the store, nor any bystanders on the street or in traffic, were harmed despite several dozen shots being fired, according to Mr. Hissrich.
In the immediate aftermath of the shooting, police searched the nearby area for a suspect, but no one had been taken into custody.
Mr. Hissrich said the exact circumstances surrounding the
shooting were unclear. Several witnesses said a passing car may have been involved in the exchange of gunfire, but Mr. Hissrich would not confirm that.
A witness who asked not to be identified said he was working across the street from the grocery store when he heard what he thought were firecrackers.
“There was a guy laying on the ground in front of the bus stop, holding on to his leg,” the man said. “He was shooting up at an angular direction, up and out, and he got up and limped away and halfway through the parking lot he started shooting again in the direction he had come from. It was real reckless; shots were everywhere. It sounded like they both unloaded their clips.
“It was pretty chaotic. It was gunshots, and in Greenfield you don’t expect it to be like that. When you see someone actually shooting and you see the smoke come out of the gun and everything, it’s like – Oh, yeah, I should maybe get inside,” the man said.
He then went into the Giant Eagle and said one of the shooting victims was “on the ground bleeding and people were tending to him, and he slid his gun across the floor.”
The investigation was continuing.
