NBC renews Poehler and Offerman’s arts and crafts competition
Etsy enthusiasts, rejoice! NBC has ordered a second season of “Making It,” the Amy Poehler/Nick Offerman reality series in which the hosts trade awful puns and seriously talented crafters create works of art.
It’s a warm, fuzzy hour fans have embraced. Since its late July debut, “Making It” has become the most-watched summer series on broadcast television, averaging 6.3 million viewers. Instead of backstabbing contestants, there are goofy friendships amid an atmosphere of campy charm.
A press release announcing the renewal quoted the hosts as saying, “We’re sew excited to be ‘Making It’ again. We promise season two will have you glued to your seat.”
The show airs Tuesdays at 10 p.m., and its season finale is Sept. 4. In other reality news: Justin Johnson, aka “Alyssa Edwards,” is a fierce drag queen known best from “RuPaul’s Drag Race.” But she also has run her own dance studio for 14 years in Mesquite, Texas, and Netflix is going to tell her story.
The eight-episode documentary series debuts Oct. 5.
• Let’s see if the new “Great British Bake-Off” can rise to the occasion.
Netflix will begin streaming the revamped program Aug. 31 — with one with Paul Hollywood but no Mary Berry, Sue Perkins or Mel Giedroyc. Instead, the venerable show has Prue Leith, Sandi Toksvig and Noel Fielding.
There was a great kerfuffle last year when GBBO moved from the BBC to Channel 4 in what some deemed a cash grab.
• With more than 3 million viewers across multiple platforms, Fox’s “Beat Shazam” has been renewed for a third season. Host and executive producer Jamie Foxx is back, with his daughter, Corinne Foxx, serving as DJ.
“I really love this show and really love working with Jamie and Corinne,” said executive producer Mark Burnett. “Season three will
have even more family friendly music fun that brings families together to both watch the series and to try to ‘ Beat Shazam’ themselves.”
The program, which airs at 9 p.m. on Tuesdays, offers viewers an at-home chance to win cash prizes as the onscreen contestants work in teams to vie for a possible $1 million payoff. The goal is to identify popular songs and eventually beat the Shazam app at its own game.
• ‘Tis the season for renewals: Paramount Network has approved a fifth round of its Emmy-nominated “Lip Sync Battle.” Hosts LL Cool J and Chrissy Teigen are the originals; the show now has versions in 20 other countries.
