RB Davis carries Gateway to victory

Gators’ ground game overcomes Mt. Lebanon

Gateway sophomore running back Derrick Davis already has offers from big-time college programs such as Pitt, Penn State, Ohio State and Michigan. Expect more in his future. Davis took over as the Gators running back in the 2017 playoff run to the WPIAL title and PIAA championsh­ips. He hit the ground running in his first year as a starter with 178 yards and a touchdown for Class 5A No. 1 Gateway in its 31-8 victory at 6A No. 4 Mt. Lebanon in a Week Zero non-conference matchup.

Davis carried the ball 20 times, including a 52-yard scoring run in the first quarter.

Gators quarterbac­k Brendan Majocha completed 13 of 17 passes for 155 yards and a pair of touchdowns. was a one-man wrecking crew for host North Hills. He scored four touchdowns on runs of 2, 6, 3 and 32 yards. He also ran back an intercepti­on 68 yards for another score. Despite the point difference, Butler outgained the Indians, 189-182, in total yards.

Peters Township 43, West Toronto Prep 7: The Indians raced to a 36-0 lead in the first quarter en route to a rout of Canada’s West Toronto Prep.

Moon 32, Montour 6: Malcolm Johnson made a couple of big plays for the host Tigers by returning a blocked kick for a touchdown and then running back an intercepti­on 32 yards for another score.

Mars 7, West Mifflin 6: The Planets scored in the first quarter on a short plunge by Tyler Kowalkowsk­i and hung on late to pick up a win. West Mifflin’s Parrish Parker scored from 1 yard in the fourth quarter, but the host Titans missed the extra point.

Hampton 28, Knoch 8: The host Talbots’ Max Obenrader was an efficient 10of-14 passing for 161 yards and a 23-yard touchdown to Brandon Sickles. Obenrader found the end zone again with an 11-yard run in the fourth quarter. Knoch’s Matt Goodlin ran for 104 yards on 13 carries.

Baldwin 34, Fox Chapel 7: Angelo Priore of host Baldwin only needed seven carries to crack the 100-yard mark. He ran for 103 yards, including a 57-yard scamper to the end zone. Highlander­s quarterbac­k Mason Stahl tossed two second-quarter touchdowns. First, he found Naseer Penn for an 8-yarder, then he connected with Connor Lavelle from 20 yards.
