The National High School Musical Theater Awards held in New York each year are about experience, scholarships and exposure to the professional world of theater. No one knows that better than Eva Noblezada. The Charlotte, N.C., teenager was a Jimmy Award
Patrick Page.
And to think, it all started because she was in a high school musical.

While there’s been a lot of buzz around the ’Burgh about the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust’s International Festival of Firsts, there also are some exciting repeats happening in the city’s dance scene this fall.
At 8 p.m. Saturday at Butler Community College’s Succop Theater, Bodiography Contemporary Ballet artistic director Maria Caruso will restage modern dance pioneer Martha Graham’s famed 1930 solo “Lamentation.”
“Lamentation” “is known for its stark power,” Post-Gazette dance contributor Jane Vranish wrote earlier this year when Ms. Caruso danced her debut of the piece in February at the Byham Theater. “The soloist begins seated on a bench, encased in a purple stretch tube, a striking cocoon of Ms. Graham’s own making. Rather than focus on a specific life experience, her role is to embody grief.”
Ms. Graham was born on Pittsburgh’s North Side (known then as Allegheny City) in 1894. “Lamentation” is considered one of her signature works, so it’s a rare opportunity that Pittsburgh-based artists not in the Martha Graham Dance Company get to dance it.
Beyond the solo, the evening will include performances by Bodiography company dancers, guest artists and La Roche College dance students. Learn more at bodiographycbc.com.

On Monday, the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra’s music director Manfred Honeck is speaking at a free lunchtime lecture at Heinz Hall, Downtown, as part of the PSO’s free “Music 101” series. No reservation necessary.
Speaking of Mr. Honeck, if you didn’t hear the news, he’s extended his contract with the orchestra through 2022.
There’s plenty of other music this week, including the Jerusalem Quartet in Carnegie Hall in Oakland on Wednesday, River City Brass Band at the same hall on Thursday, another PSO lecture at City of Asylum on the North Side also on Thursday and the start of the Pittsburgh Opera season on Saturday.
