Buffalo releases former Pitt QB
The Buffalo Bills released turnover-prone quarterback Nathan Peterman.
The move was announced by the team Monday as the Bills enter their open week and only a few hours after coach Sean McDermott had backed the former Pitt quarterback by saying he maintained his confidence in the second-year player.
Peterman became the odd man out with Buffalo carrying four quarterbacks, and with rookie Josh Allen set to reclaim his starting job after missing four games with a sprained right throwing elbow.
Jaguars
Jacksonville starting center Brandon Linder will have season-ending surgery on his right knee, more bad news for a struggling team that will face the red-hot and visiting Steelers Sunday afternoon, Linder injured his knee in the 29-26 loss at Indianapolis, and coach Doug Marrone said the team captain will be placed on injured reserve. Linder is the team’s third offensive lineman — second starter — to land on injured reserve.
Bengals
Cincinnati fired defensive coordinator Teryl Austin, a day after a 51-14 loss to the Saints that ranks among the worst in franchise history. New Orleans scored on every possession except the last one — when it took a knee while in field-goal range. Then late Monday night, the Bengals re-hired fired Browns coach Hue Jackson, who served as his offensive coordinator in 2014 and 2015.
Monday night’s game
Eli Manning threw a 3yard touchdown pass to Sterling Shepard with 53 seconds left and the New York Giants snapped a five-game losing streak by beating the San Francisco 49ers, 27-23. Manning threw two touchdown passes to Odell Beckham Jr. and then engineered the late winning drive with help from a two third-down penalties against Malcolm Smith and Ahkello Witherspoon.
