Congress should take a cue from ‘Hamilton’
I recently saw “Hamilton” and it showed that people with diverse backgrounds and opinions are what made our country great. While Alexander Hamilton, Thomas Jefferson, George Washington and the rest of our Founding Fathers fought over every aspect of our new country, they were able to compromise and create the United States of America that we know and love.
Today, while Congress has the fighting and disagreeing down pat, it has forgotten the compromising and working together part. Congressmen and congresswomen are very good at saying they want to work in a “bipartisan” fashion. But I cannot think of a single member who has demonstrated that he or she is willing to do so.
The media are not helping. Watching Fox News versus CNN is like watching the news from two different countries. If our president does something good, it may be hard to find the story on CNN. But CNN is all over anything controversial or negative about Donald Trump. The exact opposite can be said about Fox News. And the conservatives who say that the liberals are uncivil and disrespectful of the president must not remember how they treated our previous president, Barack Obama. We, as citizens, only listen to what we want to hear rather than all points of view. And the media do their best to keep this as the status quo to get more viewers and revenue.
When was the last time you heard politicians or political parties admit that they made a mistake or were in error on something? I’d love to see just one politician take responsibility for his actions rather than blaming the opposing party.
Why do members of Congress get to live under different rules? If they were covered by the same medical and retirement programs as us, their view of the world might be very different than it is today.
Our country is in disarray. We need to contact our representatives and senators and let them know we have had enough. They are all good with their sound bites and rhetoric but sorely lacking in their actions and results. I, for one, have had enough.
