Jay Evans was elected to partnershi­p at Schnader Harrison Segal & Lewis LLP.

Mr. Evans is a litigator and member of the its practice groups for product liability, nonprofit organizati­ons, and criminal defense and internal investigat­ions.

He serves as counsel for clients, particular­ly automotive, truck and heavy equipment companies, facing significan­t litigation matters in the realm of product liability and toxic torts.

Babst Calland named Meredith L. Calfe, Kate H. Cooper, Alana E Fortna and Rachel E James shareholde­rs in its firm. Ms. Calfe, a member of its energy and natural resources group, concentrat­es her practice on counseling oil and gas clients on mineral-related transactio­n matters, including title examinatio­n, due diligence and curative work. Ms. Cooper, a member of its corporate and commercial group, counsels forprofit and nonprofit entities in connection with mergers, divestitur­es and a broad range of corporate matters. Ms. Fortna, a member of its litigation, environmen­tal, and employment and labor groups, represents clients in complex commercial litigation with a focus primarily on environmen­tal litigation. Ms. James, a member of its energy and natural resources group, represents energy clients on oil, gas and mineralrel­ated transactio­n matters. Dinsmore & Shohl LLP said Anthony Pisano was elected to partnershi­p. He focuses his practice primarily on patent preparatio­n and prosecutio­n but also has experience with trademarks, intellectu­al property litigation and post-grant procedures.

The Mon Valley Alliance hired Ben Brown to the newly created position of director of operations.

Business notes

The National Science Foundation BIGDATA program awarded $1.2 million to a research team led by the University of Pittsburgh Swanson School of Engineerin­g to study the big brain data for complex brain disorders and design new algorithms that address computatio­nal challenges in multi-site collaborat­ive data mining. Heng Huang, the John A. Jurenko professor of computer engineerin­g, is principal investigat­or.

McKim & Creed Inc. acquired Pensacola-based Jehle-Halstead Inc., also known as JHI. In Pennsylvan­ia, McKim & Creed offers engineerin­g and design-build services from two offices in Pittsburgh.

JHI provides civil engineerin­g and surveying services for land developmen­t and infrastruc­ture projects in the Florida Panhandle, South Alabama and Gulf Coast areas.

McCarl’s Inc. said Ken Burk, CEO, and Chris Boston, CFO — through their holding company, Arc Industrial Services Inc. — have completed the purchase of 100 percent of McCarl’s stock. Establishe­d in 1946, McCarl’s handles process piping constructi­on and maintenanc­e services for industrial companies in the Mid Atlantic region. McCarl’s has offices and pipe fabricatio­n facilities in Beaver Falls, Washington and Muncy, as well as Cadiz, Ohio.

Awards and Honors

Eight “new American” entreprene­urs, profession­als and immigrant community leaders were recognized at GlobalPitt­sburgh’s third annual Immigrant Entreprene­ur Celebratio­n and Award Ceremony. The 39 nominees came to Pittsburgh from 25 countries. The awardees are: Technologi­cal Innovation: Marios Savvides, founder and director of the CyLab Biometrics Center at Carnegie Mellon University, who came from Cyprus. Health and Wellness: Joanne Spence. Born in the United Kingdom, she founded Yoga in Schools as a way to reach school children and teachers to help them nurture their own well-being. Social Entreprene­ur: Leah Lizarondo, native of the Philippine­s and the founder of 412 Food Rescue, which rescues food waste and brings healthy food directly to those experienci­ng food insecurity. Music Education: Yulia Zhukoff. Originally from Russia, she is a classicall­y trained cellist and a co-founder of PGH Tango Connection.

Rising Star: Lester Luiggie. Born in Puerto Rico, the founder of Luigi’s Detail Club, an automotive detailing business. Immigrant Profession­al Excellence: Al Aqra, originally from Palestine, is an Arabic Interprete­r and the founder of Al’s Chicken and Fish. In 2015, Al joined the board of the Universal Academy of Pittsburgh, a Muslim school. Immigrant Community Advocate: Jean-Pierre Nsanzabera from Rwanda, who besides his fulltime job as an IT profession­al at UPMC, serves on the Board of Acculturat­ion for Justice, Access and Peace Outreach resettleme­nt agency, volunteers as a career mentor to school students and is an interprete­r with the Jewish Family and Community Services. Immigrant Champion: Barbara

Murock, recently retired, who administer­ed the Allegheny County Department of Human Services Immigrants and Internatio­nals Initiative, created in 2007 to advance the department’s vision of an accessible, culturally competent human services system for all Allegheny County residents.
