Mr. Evans is a litigator and member of the its practice groups for product liability, nonprofit organizations, and criminal defense and internal investigations.
He serves as counsel for clients, particularly automotive, truck and heavy equipment companies, facing significant litigation matters in the realm of product liability and toxic torts.
Babst Calland named Meredith L. Calfe, Kate H. Cooper, Alana E Fortna and Rachel E James shareholders in its firm. Ms. Calfe, a member of its energy and natural resources group, concentrates her practice on counseling oil and gas clients on mineral-related transaction matters, including title examination, due diligence and curative work. Ms. Cooper, a member of its corporate and commercial group, counsels forprofit and nonprofit entities in connection with mergers, divestitures and a broad range of corporate matters. Ms. Fortna, a member of its litigation, environmental, and employment and labor groups, represents clients in complex commercial litigation with a focus primarily on environmental litigation. Ms. James, a member of its energy and natural resources group, represents energy clients on oil, gas and mineralrelated transaction matters. Dinsmore & Shohl LLP said Anthony Pisano was elected to partnership. He focuses his practice primarily on patent preparation and prosecution but also has experience with trademarks, intellectual property litigation and post-grant procedures.

The Mon Valley Alliance hired Ben Brown to the newly created position of director of operations.
Business notes
The National Science Foundation BIGDATA program awarded $1.2 million to a research team led by the University of Pittsburgh Swanson School of Engineering to study the big brain data for complex brain disorders and design new algorithms that address computational challenges in multi-site collaborative data mining. Heng Huang, the John A. Jurenko professor of computer engineering, is principal investigator.
McKim & Creed Inc. acquired Pensacola-based Jehle-Halstead Inc., also known as JHI. In Pennsylvania, McKim & Creed offers engineering and design-build services from two offices in Pittsburgh.
JHI provides civil engineering and surveying services for land development and infrastructure projects in the Florida Panhandle, South Alabama and Gulf Coast areas.
McCarl’s Inc. said Ken Burk, CEO, and Chris Boston, CFO — through their holding company, Arc Industrial Services Inc. — have completed the purchase of 100 percent of McCarl’s stock. Established in 1946, McCarl’s handles process piping construction and maintenance services for industrial companies in the Mid Atlantic region. McCarl’s has offices and pipe fabrication facilities in Beaver Falls, Washington and Muncy, as well as Cadiz, Ohio.

Eight “new American” entrepreneurs, professionals and immigrant community leaders were recognized at GlobalPittsburgh’s third annual Immigrant Entrepreneur Celebration and Award Ceremony. The 39 nominees came to Pittsburgh from 25 countries. The awardees are: Technological Innovation: Marios Savvides, founder and director of the CyLab Biometrics Center at Carnegie Mellon University, who came from Cyprus. Health and Wellness: Joanne Spence. Born in the United Kingdom, she founded Yoga in Schools as a way to reach school children and teachers to help them nurture their own well-being. Social Entrepreneur: Leah Lizarondo, native of the Philippines and the founder of 412 Food Rescue, which rescues food waste and brings healthy food directly to those experiencing food insecurity. Music Education: Yulia Zhukoff. Originally from Russia, she is a classically trained cellist and a co-founder of PGH Tango Connection.
Rising Star: Lester Luiggie. Born in Puerto Rico, the founder of Luigi’s Detail Club, an automotive detailing business. Immigrant Professional Excellence: Al Aqra, originally from Palestine, is an Arabic Interpreter and the founder of Al’s Chicken and Fish. In 2015, Al joined the board of the Universal Academy of Pittsburgh, a Muslim school. Immigrant Community Advocate: Jean-Pierre Nsanzabera from Rwanda, who besides his fulltime job as an IT professional at UPMC, serves on the Board of Acculturation for Justice, Access and Peace Outreach resettlement agency, volunteers as a career mentor to school students and is an interpreter with the Jewish Family and Community Services. Murock, recently retired, who administered the Allegheny County Department of Human Services Immigrants and Internationals Initiative, created in 2007 to advance the department’s vision of an accessible, culturally competent human services system for all Allegheny County residents.
