Heisman winner declares for NFL draft

Kyler Murray, the first-round Major League Baseball draft pick of the Oakland A’s and Heisman Trophy-winning Oklahoma quarterbac­k, declared himself eligible for the NFL draft Monday. He announced his decision in a tweet, ending his brief and storied college career.

Notre Dame’s all-time leading rusher Autry Denson Jr. (4,318 yards from 1995-98) was named Charleston Southern’s head football coach.

• Iowa tight end T.J. Hockenson, a redshirt sophomore who won the Mackey Award in 2018, will enter the NFL draft.

Hockey

Defenseman Josh Gorges, 34, announced his retirement after 13 years in the NHL, having twice reached the Eastern Conference final with the Montreal Canadiens. He has been out of hockey since his contract expired with Buffalo last season.

Baseball

Catcher Yasmani Grandal, 30, and the Milwaukee Brewers finalized an $18.25 million, one-year contract. The deal, agreed to last week subject to a physical, includes a $16 million salary this year and a $16 million option for 2020 with a $2.25 million buyout. Either side may turn down the option.

• Gold Glove-winning second baseman DJ LeMahieu, 30, and the New York Yankees finalized a $24 million, two-year contract. The deal was agreed to Friday subject to a physical.

• The Minnesota Twins completed a one-year contract with former Los Angeles Angels right-hander Blake Parker and will give him a chance to compete for the closer’s role.

• Left-hander Derek Holland, 32, agreed to a oneyear contract for a guaranteed $7 million to stay with the San Francisco Giants.

• Former Chicago White Sox outfielder Avisail Garcia agreed to a one-year, $3.5 million contract with the Tampa Bay Rays.

• Mel Stottlemyr­e, the former ace who later won five World Series rings as the longtime pitching coach for the New York Yankees and Mets, died Sunday at the age of 77. See obituary, Page B-3.

Pro basketball

The NBA cleared Cleveland of any wrongdoing for signing forward Patrick McCaw as a restricted free agent and then releasing him after three games.
