Neshannock slides past Beaver, 42-39

Lancers avenge earlier loss to No. 1 Class 3A team

Neshannock used a 12-5 third-quarter advantage to take control, then held on late to knock off top-ranked Beaver, 42-39, in a Class 3A Section 1 clash.

Brie Dean led the charge for the third-ranked Lancers (12-2, 7-1), as she scored all of her 14 points in the second and third quarters. Beaver (11-3, 6-2) got a game-high 20 points, 16 in the first half, from Emma Pavelek.

Each team won on the other’s home court this season.

■ Jenna Guido made four free throws in the fourth quarter —- including two in the final moments — to help lift Class 5A No. 4 Gateway (12-3, 6-1) to a 50-46 Section 2 victory on the road against fifth-ranked Franklin Regional (9-4, 5-2). Lexi Jackson had six points in the fourth and finished with 20. Franklin Regional’s Cali Konek, a UNC-Charlotte recruit, netted a game-high 22 points, including six 3-pointers. Konek knocked down a trio of 3-pointers in the fourth quarter to spark the Panthers.

■ Penn-Trafford (7-7, 4-4) shocked Class 5A No. 2 Penn Hills (11-4, 7-1) in overtime by beating the Indians, 42-38, in a Section 3 clash. The Warriors got 11 points from Stephanie O’Donnell.

■ After a tight first quarter, Class 6A No. 1 North Allegheny (15-0, 8-0) stepped on the gas and turned an 11-7 advantage against Shaler into a 54-28 Section 1 rout. The Tigers’ Lizzy Groetsch led all scorers with 20 points. Emily Cavacini had 18 for the Titans (4-10, 3-5).

■ Maria Cerro scored 10 points in the first quarter and finished with a gamehigh 20 for Class 6A No. 3 Bethel Park as it breezed past Hempfield, 64-32, in Section 2. Maddie Dziezgowsk­i added 18 for the Black Hawks (12-1, 7-1). Sarah Liberatore paced Hempfield (6-7, 1-7) with 19.

■ Hannah Lindemuth and Claire Mercurio netted 18 points each for West Allegheny (8-5, 3-5) as the Indians avenged a Class 5A Section 1 loss to Trinity (7-7, 5-3) with a 55-42 win.

■ Jada Lee, who had a triple-double last week, continued putting up big numbers for Carlynton (11-2, 6-2) with a 20-point, 10-rebound performanc­e in a 53-41 victory at Derry (6-8, 4-4) in Class 3A Section 3. The Trojans’ Destiny Roberts had a double-double of her own with 15 points and 10 blocked shots.

■ Class 4A No. 5 Southmorel­and (13-2, 7-1) got 17 points from Maggie Moore and narrowly got by Section 3 foe West Mifflin (5-7, 4-4), 48-44.

■ Sarah Price’s 26 points helped Upper St. Clair (8-6, 5-3) pull away from CanonMcMil­lan (5-9, 2-6) for a 5645 Class 6A Section 2 win.

Star of the day

Jeannette’s Dymond Crawford racked up 31 points, 11 rebounds, six steals and two blocks for the Jayhawks (3-11, 2-5) in a 55-21 rout against Springdale (0-14, 0-7) in Class 2A Section 2 to snap a ninegame losing skid.
