Duke flexes its muscle in 81-71 win at Virginia

RJ Barrett had 26 points as No. 2-ranked Duke beat No. 3 Virginia Saturday night, 8171.

Barrett hit his first five tries 3-pointers as the visiting Blue Devils (21-2, 9-1 ACC) opened a 29-15 lead. Kyle Guy and Ty Jerome each had 16 to lead Virginia (20-2, 8-2), which lost a 13-game home win streak, falling to Duke at home for the third time in a row.

The John Paul Jones sellout crowd wanted revenge for a Jan. 19 loss in North Carolina, but Duke played big in front of LeBron James.

Virginia’s 18-8 run closed the gap to 39-35 at half. But Cam Reddish took over from long range, hitting three times as the Blue Devils pushed the margin to 52-41, keeping their top-5 foe at a distance.

The Blue Devils remain on the road, playing Tuesday night at No. 16 Louisville. The Cavaliers head to Chapel Hill Monday night to play No. 8 North Carolina.

North Carolina

Freshman Coby White scored 33 points as eighthrank­ed North Carolina held off Miami in overtime, 88-85. North Carolina (19-4, 9-1 ACC) is off to its best ACC start under coach Roy Williams.

TCU

The Horned Frogs stunned No. 17 Iowa State, 92-83, for their first road win over a top25 team in 21 years. The Cyclones (18-6, 7-4 Big 12) were on a four-game run while TCU (17-6, 5-5) had lost its last two road games by an average of 22.5 points.

Utah

Parker Van Dyke hit a buzzer-beater to seal a Utes comeback over UCLA, 93-92. Jaylen Hands had a careerhigh 27 for the Bruins (12-12, 5-6 Pac-12), who were outscored 48-25 after leading by 22 with 12:10 left (23-9 in the last 2:45). UCLA shot 70 percent in the first half.

Michigan State

Magic Johnson was in town to celebrate his 1979 title and brought some luck with him. Nick Ward had 22 to lead a 79-55 win over Minnesota as No. 9 Michigan State (19-5, 10-3 Big Ten) ended a three-game losing streak.

Marquette

Markus Howard scored 38 and 10th-ranked Marquette nearly lost a 15-point lead before handing No. 14 Villanova its first Big East loss, 66-65. Phil Booth had 19 for Villanova (19-5, 10-1), which had won 11 in a row.

Clemson

Clemson beat its first ranked foe of the year, upsetting No. 11 Virginia Tech, 59-51. The Tigers (15-8, 5-5 ACC) lost five of their first six ACC games but have won four in a row. The Hokies (18-5, 7-5) lost consecutiv­e games for the first time this year.
