A tragic matter
There is nothing amusing or remotely reflective of pregnancy in the Feb. 1 editorial cartoon. When a woman seeks to terminate a pregnancy at or after the halfway point, it is because of a tragedy: Either the mother is gravely ill or there is a serious fetal abnormality.
Determining what measures to take involve a physician, family members, often a religious counselor and a lot of tears. How can anybody make a joke about a highly emotional decision which might end in the loss of a mother or a muchwanted baby, or both?
Imagine for a moment the response of a pregnant woman facing her own death and that of a much anticipated baby and seeing an insulting cartoon. Pregnancy is an experience involving many anxious moments at best; at worst, it can be a tragedy for an entire family. It is not a condition that lends itself to cheap, attempted humor. BARBARA LOGAN
