Connecticut loses top scorer Adams

-

Connecticut leading scorer Jalen Adams has a Grade 2 sprain of the medial collateral ligament in his left knee and will need four to six weeks to recover. The injury could mean his Huskies career is over.

Adams, averaging 17 points per game this season, was hurt in Connecticut’s 8163 loss at Temple, falling awkwardly as he went for a loose ball. He was helped off the court, unable to put weight on the knee.

A Grade 1 MCL sprain might’ve allowed Adams to return in two weeks. With the AAC tournament March 14-17 and a more severe diagnosis, though, it seems unlikely that he will make it back this season, unless Connecticut can earn an NCAA or NIT berth without him.

A top-30 recruit from Roxbury, Mass., Adams has been Connecticut’s top scorer and assist-maker over the past three years. The program has back-to-back losing years and is 13-10 so far this season.

Yves Pons will miss the top-ranked Volunteers’ game with Florida for a facial injury from practice. Officials said Pons had a “corrective procedure” Thursday after he was hurt. Pons made 13 starts in a row from Nov. 28 to Jan. 23 and, after going scoreless in four consecutive games, had six points Tuesday in a 72-60 win over Missouri.
