1979 Followers of Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini seized power in Iran.

1986 U.S. Steel chairman David Roderick announced the completion of a $3 billion merger agreement between U.S. Steel Corp. and the Texas Oil and Gas Co.

1990 South African black activist Nelson Mandela was freed after 27 years in captivity. 2001 Three Rivers Stadium was imploded to make room for parking at Heinz Field and PNC Park.
