Volunteers avenge Kentucky loss

No. 7 Tennessee tops No. 4 Wildcats to maintain winning streak at home

Jordan Bone scored a career-high 27 points as No. 7 Tennessee beat No. 4 Kentucky Saturday, 71-52.

The win came two weeks after Kentucky snapped the Volunteers’ school-record, 19-game winning streak.

Tennessee (26-3, 14-2 SEC) earned its 25th home win in a row to remain tied atop the Southeaste­rn Conference with No. 13 LSU after the Tigers beat Alabama, 74-69. Kentucky (24-5, 13-3) lost at Thompson-Boling Arena for a fourth consecutiv­e year.

PJ Washington was the lone Wildcat in double figures with 13 points as Kentucky managed its lowest point total since a 64-48 loss to Vanderbilt in the 2013 SEC Tournament.

Central Florida

Collin Smith scored 21 points as Central Florida beat No. 8 Houston, 69-64. The Knights (22-6, 12-4 American Athletic) earned the highest-ranked road win in school history, snapped a seven-game skid against ranked foes and ended Houston’s 33-game home win streak, which was the nation’s longest. The Cougars (27-2, 14-2) had not been higher in the AP poll since reaching No. 5 in 1983-84.

Indiana

Justin Smith scored a career-high 24 points as the Hoosiers beat sixth-ranked Michigan State, 63-62. Indiana (15-14, 6-12 Big Ten) won its second game in a row agianst a ranked opponent and swept the season series with the Spartans (23-6, 14-4), led Saturday by Cassius Winston with 20 points and 11 assists.

Notebook Duke

Jack White made his first 3-pointer in 29 tries as the No. 3 Blue Devils beat Miami 87-57 in Duke’s third game without Zion Williamson. Duke (25-4, 13-3 ACC) never trailed, shooting 57 percent after its second loss in three games. Chris Lykes, who scored in double figures in 24 of Miami’s previous 27 games, had a 1-of-15 day for the Hurricanes (12-16, 4-12).

Purdue

The No. 14 Boilermake­rs beat Ohio State 86-51 for sole possession of first place in the Big Ten. Purdue (22-7, 153) shot 55.9 percent while the Buckeyes (18-11, 8-10) shot 33.3 percent. Purdue led 32-13 in the first half as Ohio State played down leading scorer Kaleb Wesson, suspended indefinite­ly Friday for violating an unspecifie­d athletic department policy.

Iowa

Without coach Fran McCaffery, who was suspended two games for yelling at a referee after Tuesday’s loss at Ohio State, the No. 22 Hawkeyes lost their third game of the last four, falling 86-72 to Rutgers at home. The Hawkeyes (21-8, 10-8 Big Ten) hit just eight 3pointers on 29 attempts.

Wofford

Fletcher Magee had a season-high 36 points as the 24th-ranked Terriers beat Samford, 85-64. Wofford (264, 18-0) won its 17th game in a row to become the fourth school to go unbeaten in the Southern Conference. Steph Curry’s 2007-08 Davidson team was the last to do so.
