Pick of the week

- ROB OWEN

THURSDAY “Superstore,” 8 p.m., NBC.

The NBC big box store comedy is back after a midseason hiatus for more stories of the Cloud 9 co-workers.

“I think one of the nicest things I’ve ever heard anyone say about our show is that it’s the type of world they want to live in, a world where people can be so different from each other and believe such different things and treat each other with decency,” said series star America Ferrera (“Ugly Betty”) in a January NBC press conference during the Television Critics Association winter 2019 press tour in Pasadena, Caif. “That’s something that we’re not seeing a lot of in our society and it’s something that you can find on our show. So, we make you laugh. But, as one person put it, it restores your faith in humanity. I agree.”

Ms. Ferrera praised the diversity of the cast, not just for diversity’s sake, but for what that brings to the series.

“When we talk about the women on the show, there isn’t just one woman on this show, which means that one woman doesn’t have to represent all women,” she said. “We all get to address the issues of whatever it is — sexuality, womanhood, class, race, economy through our own individual lens. … And we’ve had a lot of people talking about how, kind of quietly, revolutionary, the diversity has given us the opportunity to not just say something you haven’t heard before, but say many things you haven’t heard before in the same world.”
