Brown’s cousin on team’s radar

Oklahoma WR interviewing at combine

INDIANAPOLIS — In an ironic twist to what has already been a bizarre situation, the Steelers were to meet with Antonio Brown’s cousin — Oklahoma receiver Marquise Brown — Friday night at the NFL Scouting Combine.

Brown, a diminutive receiver who had 75 receptions for 1,318 yards and 10 touchdowns as a junior in 2018, will be among a number of receivers the Steelers will interview at the combine.

But even more bizarre is that Brown (5-9, 166) said he has no idea what is going on with his cousin and the Steelers, who are actively trying to trade their AllPro receiver.

When he was asked what he made of the situation that has gained national attention since the first week of January, Brown said, “What’s going on?”

When he was told his cousin wants to be traded and the Steelers are trying to oblige him, Brown said, “That’s him. Whatever he likes to do, I just wish him the best and nothing but success.”

Brown, whose nickname is “Hollywood,” said he last talked with his more famous relative just two weeks ago when Antonio visited him in Florida. But the subject of what might happen to the Steelers receiver or what spawned his erratic behavior apparently was never discussed.

“Nah, mostly when we talk, he motivates me, helping me deal with what I’m going through,” said Brown, who is not participating in drills at the combine because of a Lisfranc injury. “It’s mostly talk about me.”

When he was asked if he expects the Steelers to ask about his cousin, Brown just laughed.

“He leads by example,” Brown said. “When we work out, we work out together, watch film. He shows me how to treat my body in everyday things.”

And what did he learn from watching the five-time Pro Bowl receiver?

“His aggressiveness,” Brown said. “Any time he gets the ball, he wants to score, as well. In that sense, we have the same mentality — get the ball and score.”
