IUP’s hot first half too much for West Chester

Jacobo Diaz scored 18 points, and Malik Miller and Dante Lombardi had 17 each as Indiana University of Pennsylvan­ia beat West Chester, 74-65, in the first round of the NCAA Division II tournament Saturday in Indiana, Pa.

The Crimson Hawks (30-2) held West Chester (22-9) to 32 percent shooting (22 of 69), including 26 percent from 3-point range (8 of 31).

Top-seeded IUP raced to a 40-30 halftime lead on the strength of its outside shooting, hitting 7 of 14 from beyond the arc. IUP, which is ranked No. 2 in the nation, will play Mercyhurst in the second round at 7:30 p.m. Sunday. Mercyhurst advanced with a 63-60 overtime win against Fairmount State.

Women

IUP 66, Virginia Union 58: The Crimson Hawks (28-3) erased a seven-point halftime deficit, outscoring Virginia Union (28-3), 43-28, in the second half in Glenville, W.Va., to advance to the third round of the NCAA Division II tournament against California (Pa.). Carolyn Appleby and Lexi Griggs led IUP with 15 points each. IUP and California tip off at 7 p.m. Monday.

California (Pa.) 87, Glenville State 77 (OT): The Vulcans (26-5) outscored Glenville State (30-3), 15-5, in overtime and will play IUP in third round of the NCAA Division II tournament at 7 p.m. Monday. Abbey Sporio led Cal with 25 points. The Vulcans led by eight points after three quarters.
