Nittany Lions shock Ohio State in hockey

Penn State upset No. 6 Ohio State, 5-1, Sunday in Columbus, Ohio, in the semifinals of the Big Ten hockey tournament.

The Nittany Lions will face Notre Dame in the conference title game Saturday in Notre Dame, Ind.

The winner of that game will become the conference’s first two-time postseason champion. The Nittany Lions won it in 2017.

Penn State built a 4-0 lead against the Buckeyes, who were the top seed in the tournament, on goals by Liam Folkes, Alex Limoges, Brandon Biro and Nate Sucese before Ohio State’s John Wiitala spoiled goalie Peyton Jones’ shutout bid at 15:38 of the third period.

Pro football

Ryan Fitzpatric­k will become the Miami Dolphins’ caretaker quarterbac­k. The well-traveled veteran agreed to terms an $11 million, two-year contract as a replacemen­t to Ryan Tannehill and a placeholde­r until the Dolphins can draft their franchise quarterbac­k. The 36-year-old Fitzpatric­k started seven games for Tampa Bay last year and had a passer rating of 100.4, which ranked ninth in the league.

Pro basketball

This is now the season of the 50-point scorer in the NBA. There have been 11 players to score at least 50 in a game this season, the most of any season in league history. Giannis Antetokoun­mpo’s 52-point effort in Milwaukee’s loss Sunday to Philadelph­ia was the record-breaker.

College basketball

UNC Greensboro, Indiana, Alabama and TCU are the No. 1 seeds for the 32-team National Invitation Tournament. The four teams were the last out of the NCAA tournament. Among the second seeds is N.C. State of the ACC.

Soccer

Allan Cruz and Mathieu Deplagne scored two minutes apart in the second half and MLS expansion FC Cincinnati won for the first time, topping the visiting 10-man Portland Timbers, 3-0. … Jozy Altidore came off the bench to score the winner in the 80th minute and host Toronto FC beat New England in its MLS home opener.

Baseball

Houston Astros manager AJ Hinch has been suspended one game for his argument and later comments about umpire Angel Hernandez over the weekend. Baseball penalized Hinch and also fined him an undisclose­d amount. Hinch said he accepted the decision and missed Sunday’s exhibition against Atlanta.

Tennis

Dominic Thiem edged error-prone Roger Federer, 3-6, 6-3, 7-5, to win the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells, Cal., denying Federer a record sixth title in the desert while claiming the biggest title of his career. Thiem trailed 4-3 and 5-4 in the third set before breaking Federer.

Auto racing

Valtteri Bottas led Mercedes teammate Lewis Hamilton in a 1-2 finish at the season-opening Australian Grand Prix in Melbourne. Bottas stayed in front the whole way to win by 20.886 seconds. It was his fourth GP title, and first since 2017.

• Richie Crampton won the Amalie Motor Oil NHRA Gatornatio­nals for the second year in a row, beating Clay Millican in the Top Fuel final at Gainesvill­e Raceway in Florida.
