Guerrero Jr. homers again, starting to show why he’s top prospect

-

After a slow start, Vladimir Guerrero Jr. is showing why he’s one of the top prospects in the majors.

Guerrero hit another home run as the Toronto Blue Jays beat the Chicago White Sox, 5-2, Sunday.

“Like I always say, I don’t try to hit homers,” Guerrero said. “I just try to put good contact on the ball, and we’ll see what happens.”

Guerrero has hit all four of his home runs in the past six games and is 7 for 21 with nine RBIs during that span. The 20-year-old didn’t homer in his first 13 games after his debut in late April.

“You’re hoping the guy in front of him gets on, because he has a chance to do something every time he goes to the plate,” Toronto manager Charlie Montoyo said of Guerrero. “It’s fun to have a guy like that in the lineup.”

Astros

Outfielder George Springer left Houston’s game against Boston in the fifth inning with lower back stiffness. Springer, who entered Sunday leading the American League with 17 homers while batting .318 with 42 RBIs, took three big swings in the first inning and struck out against Chris Sale. On the second and third swings, Springer appeared to reach briefly for the lower right side of his back.

Dodgers

Hyun-Jin Ryu’s shutout streak rolled on Sunday. Ryu blanked the Reds over seven innings to extend his major league-leading streak to 31. Ryu (6-1) allowed five hits with one walk and five strikeouts and lowered his ERA to a National League-best 1.52 for the season. “He’s just locked in right now with all of his pitches,” manager Dave Roberts said. “It’s fun to watch. He’s healthy. The conditions, the situations don’t matter.”
