Laurel upsets top seed

Shenango falls to section rival in 3rd meeting of season

The third time was a charm for Laurel, which on Monday upset the No. 1 seed in Class 2A.

Robert Herr’s RBI double in the fifth snapped a tie and propelled Laurel to a 4-2 quarterfin­al win against Shenango at Pullman Park.

Laurel (12-6), the No. 9 seed, lost to Section 2 rival Shenango (19-3) twice in the regular season.

Seton LaSalle 6, Our Lady of the Sacred Heart 5: Seton LaSalle (17-2) scored two runs with two outs in the bottom of the seventh to top OLSH (18-4) at Burkett Complex. Freshman Brett Wagner’s walk-off single was the difference.

Serra Catholic 7, Avonworth 2: Mark Black hit a two-run home run, his WPIALleadi­ng 12th of the season, and Pat Brennan added a two-run triple to help Serra (19-2) beat Avonworth (16-5) at Boyce Mayview Park.

Neshannock 11, Carmichael­s 1: Preston Turk went 4 for 4 with three RBIs and scored four runs to lead Neshannock (18-2) to a sixinning win against Carmichael­s (16-3) at Burkett Complex.

Class 4A

Yough 3, South Park 1: Pitt recruit Jarett Bach improved to 7-0 after giving up one unearned run and striking out 10 to help Yough (145) defeat South Park (14-8) at West Mifflin.

Beaver 10, Highlands 0: A five-run fourth vaulted Beaver (12-7) to a six-inning win over Highlands (11-9) at Pullman Park. Zach Hansen hit a tworun single in the fourth and Mason Rose added a tworun double in the sixth.

Greensburg Salem 0, New Castle 0 (suspended): After 10 innings of scoreless ball, darkness forced the suspension of this game at Fox Chapel. Greensburg Salem had a runner thrown out at the plate to close the 10th. The teams will resume Tuesday at North Allegheny.

Class 3A

Freeport 1, Waynesburg 0: Jarrett Heilman fired a one-hitter with 11 strikeouts to push Freeport (14-5) past Waynesburg (12-6) at Latrobe.

Steel Valley 8, BethCenter 0: Nick Harhai and Aidan Good combined on a one-hitter for Steel Valley (11-8) against Beth-Center (8-10) at West Mifflin. Brady Miller had three RBIs.

Keystone Oaks 9, Ellwood City 6: Winning pitcher Sam Tortorella struck out 11 to help Keystone Oaks (14-4) topple Ellwood City (8-10) at Boyce Mayview Park.

Hopewell 3, Burrell 1: Hopewell (14-5) used a triple play in the third to edge Burrell (12-5) at Boyce Mayview Park. Jake McGovern was the winning pitcher.

Class 1A

California 9, Eden Christian 6: Top-seed California (16-1) used a four-run sixth to beat Eden Christian (11-9) at Latrobe. Trailing, 6-5, Payton Conte hit a two-run single to put the Trojans ahead.

Union 7, St. Joseph 6: Bryce Smith’s walk-off single helped Union (14-3) rally from a 5-0 deficit to beat St. Joseph (8-8) at Pullman Park.

Vincentian 10, Bishop Canevin 0: Sammy Basso tossed a shutout and Jake Stotsky went 2 for 4 with three RBIs to propel defending champion Vincentian (12-3) past Bishop Canevin (10-9) in five innings at Shaler.

Quigley 7, Greensburg Central Catholic 3: L.J. Evans had three RBIs to drive Quigley (13-6) to a win against Greensburg C.C. (109) at Kiski Area.
