Ellwood City edges South Allegheny

For the second consecutive game, Ellwood City needed to go extra innings before emerging victorious.
Ellwood City knocked off WPIAL Class 3A No. 2seeded South Allegheny, 1110, in nine innings Monday in a quarterfinal at Gateway.
Freshman Angie Nardone went 4 for 5 with four RBIs. Natalia Greco had two doubles and two RBIs for the No. 10 Wolverines (13-6).
Mikala Swearingen of the Gladiators (16-3) went 4 for 4 and bashed a two-run homer.

Avonworth 3, Southmoreland 2: Freshman Meghan Fissore’s single in the bottom of the ninth inning lifted the Antelopes (18-2) to a win against the defending champion Scotties (10-7) at North Allegheny.

Penn-Trafford 10, Albert Gallatin 0: The top-seeded Warriors scored five runs in the fifth to set up a mercyrule victory against the Colonials at Seton Hill University. Morgan Nedley and Brooke Cleland homered for PennTrafford.
Franklin Regional 3, Hampton 0: For the first time since 2009, Franklin Regional (13-8) will play in the semifinals after blanking Hampton (16-4) at Fox Chapel.
West Allegheny 5, Plum 4: Defending champion West Allegheny (10-7) pounded out 10 hits and knocked off Plum (15-4) at Hampton.
Connellsville 3, Trinity 2: The Falcons (15-6) are in the WPIAL semifinals for a second consecutive season after edging the Hillers (14-5) at Peters Township.
Elizabeth Forward 5, Indiana 1: Kailey Larcinese struck out eight and allowed two hits to power the Warriors (15-3) past Indiana (129) at Gateway.
Thomas Jefferson 1, Yough 0: The Jaguars (15-3) scored an unearned run in the third inning off of a misplayed fly ball to get past Yough (13-6) at Peters Township.
Mount Pleasant 9, Ringgold 1: Carolyn Alincic sat down 10 batters and allowed four hits as the Vikings (160) rolled past the Rams (8-9) at Seton Hill University.
Knoch 12, Greensburg Salem 2: The Knights (17-1) used an eight-run sixth inning to spark a mercy-rule win against the Golden Lions (712) at Hampton.

Chartiers-Houston 5, Mohawk 3: The Buccaneers (17-3) built a 5-0 lead by the fourth inning and cruised past Mohawk (12-7) at North Allegheny.
Freedom 7, Neshannock 2: Pinch-hitter Selena Bittenbender blasted a three-run homer in the sixth to propel the Bulldogs (16-5) past the Lancers (16-4) at Sewickley Academy.
Laurel 12, Carmichaels 4: At Montour, Laurel (18-2) got 15 strikeouts from Kayla Ruperto to advance.
Frazier 10, Vincentian 0: Logan Hartman fired a onehitter with 12 strikeouts as Frazier (16-3) shut down the Royals (15-2) at Peters Township.

West Greene 6, Bishop Canevin 2: Jade Renner struck out nine as the Pioneers (17-4) advanced past the Crusaders (7-6) at Trinity.
