Mars storms into title match
Freeport’s string of upsets snapped
Freeport pulled off two of the biggest upsets in WPIAL Class 2A boys lacrosse history when it knocked off No. 5-seeded Chartiers Valley and No. 4 Moon to move into the semifinals as a No. 12 seed.
Mars was not about to be upset victim No. 3 for the Yellowjackets.
Attacker Mike Doyle scored a school-record 12 goals Monday to help Mars open a seven-goal lead in the first period and power the three-time defending champion Planets back into the WPIAL Class 2A championship with a 19-5 victory against Freeport.
“It was one of our keys to get off to a quick start, and we had a little bit tougher time than we did the last time, but we did a good job once we got possessions to be patient,” Mars coach Bob Marcoux said.
