A good day for Murray
Matt Murray shuts out USA to help Canada clinch Group A in world hockey.
Goaltender Matt Murray had a shutout and PierreLuc Dubois scored early, sending Canada past the United States, 3-0, Tuesday at the world hockey championship in Kosice, Slovakia.
With the win, Canada won Group A and will next play Switzerland in the quarterfinals. The Americans, who had won five in a row, will face the highscoring and undefeated Russians on Thursday.
The Penguins’ Jared McCann also scored for Canada.
College baseball
West Virginia (34-18), seeded fourth in the Big 12 tournament that starts Wednesday in Oklahoma City, claimed two conference awards. Randy Mazey was chosen the Big 12 coach of the year and Alek Manoah (1.91 ERA, 125 strikeouts in 14 games) was named pitcher of the year.
• Washington State fired coach Marty Lees, who was 70-137-2 in four disappointing seasons.
College football
Former Penn State coach Joe Moorhead signed a contract extension through the 2022 season as Mississippi State head coach that will pay an average base salary of $3.2 million.

Seattle Storm guard Sue Bird, an 11-time WNBA All-Star and the league’s oldest player at 38, needs arthroscopic surgery on her left knee and will be out indefinitely, another big blow for the defending WNBA champs.

Texas Rangers reliever Shawn Kelley — 3-0, 2 saves, 1.29 ERA in 14 appearances — learned that two lumps removed from his throat last week were benign, and the right-hander was activated from the 10-day injured list.
• Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Julio Urias was reinstated Tuesday from a seven-day administrative leave by Major League Baseball, which was looking into his May 13 arrest for investigation of misdemeanor domestic battery.
• The Seattle Mariners placed second baseman Dee Gordon (bruised wrist) and third baseman Ryon Healy (back inflammation) on the 10-day injured list and signed right-hander Anthony Bass to a one-year contract. Seattle made eight roster moves before its game Tuesday night against Texas.
• The Los Angeles Angels placed shortstop Andrelton Simmonson, leading the majors with 44 hits since April 15, on the 10-day injured list after he sprained his left ankle (grade 3) trying to beat out an infield hit Monday.
Pro football
The Buffalo Bills signed defensive end Jerry Hughes to a two-year contract extension worth up to $23 million, about $19 million is guaranteed.
• The Tampa Bay Buccaneers released six-time Pro Bowl defensive tackle Gerald McCoy, describing the move as a mutual agreement after nine seasons. McCoy, the third overall pick in the 2010 NFL draft, was due to make $13 million next season, but none of it was guaranteed.
• The New England Patriots reached an agreement on a two-year extension with receiver Julian Edelman that is worth $18 million and includes an $8 million signing bonus and $12 million in guaranteed money.
Boxing
Manny Pacquiao (61-72), holder of titles in eight weight classes in his 24 years in boxing, will face undefeated welterweight champion Keith Thurman (29-0) in a pay-per-view July 20 in Las Vegas for the WBA belt.
