Seton-LaSalle advances to Class 2A final for first time

Seton LaSalle moved into uncharted territory with its 3-2 win against Our Lady of the Sacred Heart in the WPIAL Class 2A semifinals Tuesday night at North Allegheny High School. Both teams were making their first appearance in the WPIAL semifinals.

Seton LaSalle, 16-1 and the No. 2 seed, will face defending champion Ambridge (14-2) in the title match at 6 p.m. Thursday at Fox Chapel.

“This is a historic event for Seton LaSalle volleyball,” Rebels coach John Lawrence said. “This is the moment we’ve been waiting for since I began the program in 2006. We’re looking forward to the finals.”

OLSH won the first and fourth sets, 25-22 and 2520. Seton LaSalle won the second and third sets, 25-17 and 25-18, then laimed the fifth, 15-8.

Other Class 2A

• Ambridge, the No. 4 seed, reached the title match for the 11th time in 14 years with a 25-17, 20-25, 25-21, 19-25, 15-11 upset of topseeded Derry (14-4). The Bridgers’ victory avenged a season-opening loss.

Class 3A

• Top-seeded and defending champion North Allegheny (18-0) earned its 18th title berth in the past 22 years with a 25-15, 25-16, 22-25, 25-16 win against No. 4 seed Latrobe (15-2) at Fox Chapel High School. The Tigers will face Bethel Park in the title match at 8 p.m. Thursday at Fox Chapel.

• Bethel Park (18-0), the No. 2 seed, advanced to the title match for the fourth time in seven years with a 3-2 win against No. 3 seed Shaler (144). The Black Hawks won the first two sets, 25-20 and 2624. The Titans tied it with wins of 25-20 and 25-19. The Black Hawks won the deciding set, 15-11.
