1892 Homer Plessy, a “Creole of color,” was arrested for refusing to leave a whitesonly car of the East Louisiana Railroad.
The U.S. Supreme Court, in Plessy v. Ferguson, upheld “separate but equal” racial segregation, a concept it later renounced in 1954.
1937 As the climax of a weeklong commemoration of the 150th anniversary of the founding of the University of Pittsburgh, the school celebrated the completion of its 42-story Cathedral of Learning. Construction on the structure had begun a decade before.
1965 The U.S. Supreme Court, in Griswold v. Connecticut, struck down, 7-2, a Connecticut law used to prosecute a Planned Parenthood clinic in New Haven for providing contraceptives to married couples.
1987 “Fences,” a drama written by Pittsburgh native August Wilson and set in the Hill District, won four Tony Awards, including best play, best actor and best director.
1996 First lady Hillary Rodham Clinton visited the Manchester Craftsmen’s Guild and the Strip District.
2018 The Trump administration said in a court filing that it would no longer defend key parts of the Affordable Care Act, including provisions that guarantee access to health insurance regardless of any medical conditions. It was a rare departure from the Justice Department’s practice of defending federal laws in court.
