Girls athlete of the week

// The Post-Gazette’s top female performer from the past seven days

- Laura Fox — By Steve Rotstein

The past week: Fox hit a threerun home run in the top of the ninth inning to give the Spartans a 3-0 win against Seneca Valley in the WPIAL Class 6A semifinals May 22, then hit another home run in Hempfield’s 15-0 win in the WPIAL championship game against North Allegheny May 30.

Check this out: Fox, who will play softball at Pitt-Johnstown next season, leads the Spartans with four home runs and is second on the team with a .487 batting average, .795 slugging percentage and 18 RBIs.

Has it sunk in for you yet that any one of these next three games could be your last at Hempfield?

No, it hasn’t sunk in that I even graduated yet, or that we won the WPIAL either. It’s like a big dream.

Why was last year’s state title more special than the first two?

I think just because we were down at the beginning of the game, and we had to fight to come back the whole time, and then we finally won at the very end.

Is it safe to say you’ve achieved everything you set out to accomplish in your high school career?

No, I’m not done yet. I’m going for that four-peat.

What made you decide to go to UPJ?

Good academics. I wanted to go for nursing, and it was a hard major to play softball with, and the coach was willing to work with me.

Do you ever play any other sports besides softball?

Yeah, I ran indoor track my freshman and sophomore year, and I used to play volleyball in middle school.

What events did you run in track?

I did sprints, hurdles, the 200 and sometimes the 400.

Do you have any game day superstitions?

I have a lot. I have to get my ankle taped, I wear my hair extensions, I have to wear a certain pair of spikes even though they’re falling apart, and I have to take a nap on the bus.

If you could pick your own walk-up song before every atbat, what would it be?

“All I Do is Win” by DJ Khaled. We play that as soon as we get back to the high school [after a win].

What’s one thing people would be surprised to know about you?

I don’t know. I’m actually really shy. Until I get to know somebody, then I’m super open. But I’m shy at first.

What’s one prized possession you can’t live without? My parents.
