Lions reeling after loss of Kearse
Veteran receiver out after opener
Jermaine Kearse checked several boxes for the Detroit Lions when they brought in the wide receiver as a free agent at minicamp. Kearse was familiar with new offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell’s scheme, had the flexibility to play outside or in the slot, and added a veteran presence.
Kearse is out indefinitely after after an injury Thursday in the preseason opener. He was blocking on a running play when a Patriots player landed on him from behind.
Kearse, 29, and defensive tackle Darius Kilgo were placed on injured reserve.
Coach Matt Patricia also confirmed quarterback Tom Savage from Pitt is in the concussion protocol after hitting his head on the turf on a sack during New England’s 313 thumping of Detroit.
Jaguars
Jacksonville doesn’t expect left tackle Cam Robinson and receiver Marqise Lee to be ready for the season opener. “We’ve got to go and start preparing to play without them, unfortunately,” coach Doug Marrone said. “It could change, obviously, but it’d be tough.”
Eagles
Backup quarterback Nate Sudfeld was back at practice wearing an arm sling, one day after surgery to repair a broken left wrist. Sudfeld said a plate and pins were inserted into his non-throwing wrist and he anticipates returning in September.
