Nadal rallies at Rogers Cup

Top-seeded Rafael Nadal rallied to reach the Rogers Cup semifinals in Montreal, beating No. 7 Fabio Fognini of Italy, 2-6, 6-1, 6-2.

Nadal won his 380th ATP Masters 1000 match, a day after breaking a tie with Roger Federer for the tour record. Nadal has 82 singles victories. “I have been playing better and better,” Nadal said. “It was an up-and-down match, but a positive match for me.”

The 33-year-old Spanish star will now face the winner of the late match between No. 10 Roberto Bautista Agut of Spain and No. 16 Gael Monfils of France. Fognini beat Nadal in their last meeting in the Monte Carlo Masters semifinals.

In the afternoon, Daniil Medvedev and Karen Khachanov set up an all-Russian semifinal.

Serena Williams advanced to the Rogers Cup semifinals, beating soon-to-be-top-ranked Naomi Osaka of Japan, 6-3, 6-4, at breezy at York University in Toronto. Williams will face Czech qualifier Marie Bouzkova Saturday. Bouzkova led fourth-seeded Simona Halep of Romania 6-4 when the Wimbledon champion retired because of a leg injury. The 37year-old Williams, ranked 10th and seeded eighth, won the event in 2001, 2011 and 2013 — all in Toronto — and has a tournament-record 33 victories in 37 matches.

• American Andy Murray has accepted a wild-card invitation to make his return to singles competitio­n at the Western & Southern Open next week in Mason, Ohio. The former No. 1 player hasn’t played a singles match since January.

Mi Jung Hur surged into a two-shot lead in the rain-delayed second round of the Ladies Scottish Open in North Berwick, Scotland, getting the best of the draw and finishing in the early evening with a 9under 62.

Pro basketball

Sylvia Fowles had 17 points and 12 rebounds as the host Minnesota Lynx (12-11) pulled away from the Connecticu­t Sun (16-7) for a 89-57 victory.

Jamaica’s Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce broke the 40year-old Pan American Games 200-meter record. The two-time Olympic 100 champion clocked 22.43 seconds in the Peruvian capital of Lima.

A former national figure skating team member is suing U.S. Figure Skating and a coach who he says sexually abused him as a boy. Adam Schmidt said in a lawsuit filed in state court in San Diego that coach Richard Callaghan began molesting him when he was 14.
