Angels stop Pirates, 7- 4

Reynolds’ miscue has role in ending 2- game win streak

ANAHEIM. Calif. — Winning two games in a row was fun while it lasted for the Pirates. A 7- 4 loss against the Los Angeles Angels ended the modest win streak and left the Pirates with a 2- 4 record on the six- game road trip, St. Louis to Anaheim.

The Pirates squandered a chance to earn their first three- game winning streak since before the All- Star break.

Chris Archer looked strong through 3⅔ innings. Archer had seven strikeouts after punching out Shohei Ohtani and Cole Calhoun in the fourth inning. The strikeouts came after Archer walked Mike Trout.

Albert Pujols lined a single to score Trout. The hit was his 3,167th, which is the most for any foreign- born player in Major League Baseball history.

Archer threw a wild pitch that allowed Pujols to advance to second base.

David Fletcher hit a double to score Pujols and tie the score, 2- 2. Bryan Reynolds misplayed a double from Luis Rengifo, which allowed Fletcher and Renifgo to score. It was a rare rookie moment by the player who came into the game leading baseball with a .338 average, though a hitless night dropped his average to .335.

Angels starter Dillon Peters survived a first inning where he walked Kevin Newman and hit Reynolds and Starling Marte to load the bases. Newman scored when Josh Bell grounded into a double play, and Melky Cabrera drove in Reynolds with a single.

Still, Peters made it through six innings and got the win.

The Angels put the game away with three runs against Geoff Hartlieb in the eighth. Reynolds misplayed another ball in the eighth after a miscommunication with third baseman Erik Gonzalez, allowing Calhoun to reach first and Ohtani second. A wild pitched moved the runners up and Pujols singled to bring them home. He then scored on Rengifo’s single.

Osuna serving suspension

Jose Osuna started serving a five- game suspension Wednesday for his actions in a brawl with the Cincinnati Reds on July 30. Osuna was one of six players suspended because of the fight.

Osuna started his suspension on the same day that Keone Kela’s 10- day suspension ended. Kela dropped his appeal Aug. 3.

Osuna is hitting .316 with eight home runs and 23 RBIs this season.

Reliever Kyle Crick also was suspended for the July 30 fight, though he has yet to serve his suspension.

“It has an impact,” manager Clint Hurdle said. “You’re going to take a bat out of the lineup that has been very productive.”
