SHORT HOPS

-

Sunday

Says A’s manager Bob Melvin after his team struck out 16 times vs. the White Sox: “At least we didn’t have to run down the line too hard today and nobody got hurt pulling any hamstrings.” Despite all the whiffs, the A’s still win the game, 2-0. Monday

Gleyber Torres: Orioles killer Gleyber Torres hits his 11th, 12th and 13th home runs vs. the Orioles this season in a doubleheader sweep by the Yankees. The 13 homers move Torres into a tie with Roger Maris (1961), Joe Adcock (1956), Hank Sauer (1954) and Jimmie Foxx (1932) for the secondmost HRs vs. a team in a single season, according to ESPN Stats & Info. Only Lou Gehrig, who hit 14 vs. the Indians in 1936, has more. Tuesday

With a strikeout of Cleveland’s Oscar Mercado in the third inning, Boston P Chris Sale reaches the 2,000 strikeout plateau in just his 1,626th career inning — the fastest to 2,000 in MLB history. The previous quickest: Pedro Martinez in 1,7111⁄ IP.

The Dodgers rout the Marlins, 15-1. Incredibly, all but two of their 15 hits are for extra bases. Just as incredible, L.A. doesn’t hit its first single until the ninth inning. According to ESPN Stats & Info, the Dodgers are the first team in the modern era (since 1900) to score 15 or more runs in a game on no more than two singles.

• Boston’s Rafael Devers goes 6 for 6 with four doubles — the first line of its kind in major league history — as the Red Sox hold off the Indians in 10 innings, 7-6. Thursday

The A’s beat the Astros, 7-6, in a game that features 10 home runs, including two each by four players: Matt Chapman and Matt Olson for Oakland; Michael Brantley and Carlos Correa for Houston. Since 1908, it is only the fifth time four players hit at least two home runs in the same game, but it is the second time just this season.

There are 48 home runs hit on a day in which there are just 10 games played. The 4.8 homers per game is the most all time for a major league day with at least 10 games played.

In a seemingly impossible display of pitching, Marlins P Caleb Smith throws 106 pitches in five innings vs. the Dodgers, yet somehow allows only one hit and one run (a home run by Kyle Garlick). Friday

With San Francisco’s Mike Yastrzemski hitting three home runs including a go-ahead shot in the 11th inning, the Giants and Diamondbacks combine for 12 HRs in a 10-9 Giants win. The total is just one off the MLB record 13 hit by the Phillies and Diamondbacks June 10.
