Pitt volleyball remains undefeated with win

The No. 6-ranked Pitt women’s volleyball team (9-0) defeated its second ranked opponent in three days, picking up a 3-1 win (2522, 23-25, 25-23, 25-21) against previously unbeaten No. 16 Utah (8-1) at the Pepperdine ASICS Classic at Firestone Fieldhouse.

The Panthers defeated No. 10 Oregon Wednesday night before traveling to Malibu, Calif., for the weekend for their highest-ranked win since 2016.

Redshirt senior outside hitter Stephanie Williams earned her second consecutiv­e double-double with 10 kills and 17 digs. She added four services aces to lead the Panthers. Freshman setter Lexis Akeo had her third double-double in a row with 51 assists and 10 digs.

The Panthers closed out the Pepperdine ASICS Classic late Saturday against the host Waves at Firestone Fieldhouse.

Soccer

Striker Steevan Dos Santos scored with a shot in close at the 61minute mark to lead the Pittsburgh Riverhound­s SC (144-9) to a 1-0 victory against the Charleston Battery (8-8-11) at Highmark Stadium. It wasn’t pretty, but the Riverhound­s edged the Battery to move level with fourth-place Indy Eleven on points in the Eastern Conference.

Baseball

The Boston Red Sox are on track to pay a $13.05 million luxury tax for a season in which they are likely to miss the playoffs. The World Series champions’ payroll for purposes of the tax increased from $239.7 million on opening day to $242.8 million by Aug. 31, according to the commission­er’s office. That is well over the $206 million threshold where the tax begins. … Craig Kimbrel was “feeling better” according to Cubs manager Joe Maddon, but there still is no timetable for the closer’s return from right elbow inflammati­on.

Pro basketball

The Knicks will get a loud reminder that Kyrie Irving chose the other team in New York. The Nets are giving away 10,000 replica Irving jerseys when they host the Knicks Oct. 25, which is the second game of the season for both teams. … Michael Jordan agreed to sell a large piece of the Charlotte Hornets to two New York-based investors, a sale expected to close in the next few weeks. … Under proposed new rules, NBA teams could be fined up to $10 million for tampering and up to $6 million for entering into unauthoriz­ed agreements with players. Other maximumfin­e levels also could be raised significan­tly as well, provided the league’s board of governors approves the measures Sept. 20.

Hockey

The Minnesota Wild signed defenseman Jared Spurgeon to a $53.025 million, seven-year extension that will begin next season and go through the 2026-27 season. The deal carries an annual value of $7.575 million. … Washington Capitals forward Evgeny Kuznetsov was suspended without pay for three regular-season games by the NHL for “inappropri­ate conduct,” less than a month after he was banned from playing for Russia because of a positive test for cocaine.
