Yankees’ injury woes continue

-

New York Yankees manager Aaron Boone said Friday he’s “optimistic” Edwin Encarnacion and Gary Sanchez will be able to return before the end of the season, one day after the sluggers were injured in separate games of a doubleheader victory against Detroit.

The news was clearer for New York’s pitching staff.

Right-hander Luis Severino, who hasn’t pitched this season because of shoulder soreness, is expected to make his debut Tuesday against the Los Angeles Angels, and left-hander Jordan Montgomery will return from elbow surgery to face Toronto Sunday. Montgomery hasn’t pitched in the majors since May 1, 2018.

Indians

James Karinchak was added to the roster as Cleveland opened a critical threegame series with the American League Central Division-leading Minnesota Twins, who lead the Indians by 3½ games. Karinchak, 23, has zoomed through the club’s minor league system, recently pitching in the postseason for Class AAA Columbus. Indians manager Terry Francona said the decision to add Karinchak is not connected to All-Star closer Brad Hand being out with a tired arm. The opener, however, was postponed by rain. The teams played two full innings before powerful thunderstorms swept through Progressive Field. The game will be made up as part of a daynight doubleheader Saturday.

Braves

First baseman Freddie Freeman left Atlanta’s game against the Washington Nationals in the fourth inning Friday night because of right elbow soreness. The Braves also reinstated outfielder Nick Markakis from the 10-day injured list. Markakis, 35, missed 43 games with a fractured left wrist.

Diamondbacks

Arizona extended the contract of general manager Mike Hazen. The team didn’t release details of the extension. The 43-year-old was hired in 2016 and has helped the Diamondbacks stay competitive in the National League West Division.
