Canon-McMillan gets big victory; coach returns

-

Canon-McMillan made a rather unusual halftime adjustment Friday night. Head coach Mike Evans returned to the team from suspension midway through the game against host Hempfield, coached the final two quarters and led the Big Macs to their first win of the season, 21-12, in the Quad County Conference.

Evans had missed the past two games. He was suspended by the school after an incident in the locker room of the team’s second game of the season Aug. 30 against Mt. Lebanon.

The Spartans (2-3, 1-3) struck first when Nathan Roby ripped off a 49-yard run in the first quarter. Canon-McMillan (1-4, 1-3) then reeled off 21 unanswered points. Blake Joseph accounted for two of those scores by hauling in passes of 19 and 51 yards from Jonathan Quinque. Joseph caught eight passes for 98 yards. Quinque went 12-for-19 with 191 yards and three scores.

Both teams got a stellar performance by their top running back. Roby rumbled for 173 yards. Ryan Angott ran for 140 yards to pace the Big Macs.
