USC edges West Allegheny

It was quite the nail-biter in Imperial. Upper St. Clair battled back from a seven-point halftime deficit and held on to slip past host West Allegheny, 35-33, in a WPIAL Class 5A Allegheny Eight Conference showdown Friday night.

Ethen Dahlem completed 15 of 20 passes for 334 yards with three touchdowns for the Panthers (4-1, 3-1). Dahlem also rushed for two scores and finished with 61 rushing yards. David Pantelis, who entered the game as the WPIAL’s leading receiver, hauled in eight receptions for 273 yards and three touchdowns.

Nico Flati led the Indians (1-3, 1-3) with 101 rushing yards and three touchdowns on 19 carries. Flati’s final touchdown came on a 1-yard run with 56 seconds left in the game. The two-point conversion pass failed.

Upper St. Clair outgained West Allegheny in total offensive yards, 486-274.

Fox Chapel 16, Hampton 13: Not only did the Foxes (1-4, 1-3) capture their first victory of the season but coach Tom Loughran also celebrated his 200th career win. Loughran’s record now is 200-175-4. Shane Susnak completed 14 of 19 passes for 142 yards and a touchdown for visiting Fox Chapel. Sam Brown rushed for 135 yards and a touchdown on 27 carries. Luke Lindgren paced the Talbots (2-3, 2-2) with 162 rushing yards and a touchdown on 31 carries.

Baldwin 30, Woodland Hills 27: Baldwin’s Naseer Penn came up with an intercepti­on with 25 seconds left in the game to secure the Big East Conference win for the Highlander­s (2-3, 2-2). Mason Stahl rushed for 131 yards and two touchdowns on 26 carries for Baldwin. Angelo Priore rushed for 147 yards and a touchdown on 28 attempts. William Clark rushed for 184 yards and a touchdown on 18 carries for the visiting Wolverines (0-5, 0-4). Baldwin trailed, 12-10, at halftime but outscored Woodland Hills in the third quarter, 13-8.

Penn Hills 7, Kiski Area 3: This Northern Conference contest was far from the 64-28 outcome the No. 5 Indians (4-1, 3-0) witnessed last year against the Cavaliers (2-3, 1-3). Eddie McKissick completed 10 of 22 passes for 157 yards and a touchdown for the visiting Indians. Dontae Pollard caught a 14-yard touchdown reception in the closing seconds of the second quarter. Kiski’s lone score came from a Cody Dykes 40-yard field goal in the second quarter.

Mars 42, Armstrong 21: Teddy Ruffner rushed for 273 yards and five touchdowns to carry the Planets (4-2, 1-1) past the host Riverhawks (1-4, 0-3). Ruffner scored on runs of 3, 11, 3, 1 and 82 yards. Cole Brown led Armstrong with 136 passing yards and two touchdowns.

McKeesport 62, Plum 40: Devari Robinson scored six touchdowns as the visiting Tigers (3-2, 2-1) topped the Mustangs (2-3, 1-3). Robinson, who scored on runs of 68, 15, 4, 44 and 1, rushed for 177 yards and five scores on 25 carries. He also scored on a 90-yard punt return. Plum’s Jacob Miller completed 10 of 20 passes for 215 yards and a touchdown. He also paced the Mustangs in rushing with 86 yards and a touchdown on 11 carries.

Moon 49, Chartiers Valley 18: Dante Clay accounted for 370 yards of total offensive as the host Tigers (4-1, 2-0) thumped the Colts (2-3, 0-2) in an Allegheny Eight Conference contest. Clay completed 7 of 10 passes for 190 yards. He also rushed for 180 yards and three touchdowns on 10 carries. Jeremy Dean rushed for a pair of scores, while Dawson Snyder had three receptions for 129 yards and a touchdown.

Gateway 49, Ringgold 0: Bryson Venanzio completed 8 of 10 passes for 210 yards and four touchdowns as the Gators (4-1) dismantled the visiting Rams (0-5) in non-conference action. Derrick Davis, who entered the game averaging 18 yards a carry, scored twice in the first quarter for Gateway. His first score was a 63-yard touchdown reception and he later added a 1-yard rushing touchdown. The Gators, who led 35-0 after the first quarter, outgained Ringgold in total offensive yards, 416-108.

Latrobe 34, Connellsvi­lle 27: Ahmed Hooper scored five touchdowns as the Wildcats (2-3, 1-2) locked up its first Big East Conference win on the road against the Falcons (1-4, 0-4). Hooper rushed for 139 yards on nine carries. Latrobe trailed 20-19 at the half.

Massillon, Ohio 42, Penn-Trafford 21: The perennial-powerhouse Tigers handed the Warriors (4-1) their first loss of the season. Massillon has won 24 state titles, while Penn-Trafford entered the non-league game ranked No. 1 in Class 5A.
