Brewers are back Brewing Up a Cure No. 13

- By Bob Batz Jr.

These days, it seems that there’s no good cause that hasn’t sought a little help from beer. But the Three Rivers Underground Brewers have been doing this for 13 years now, as they hold another Brewing Up a Cure event Saturday. Once again, the benefactor is the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, for which this beer fest has raised more than $300,000.

“We like to pride ourselves on the fact that our event is very unique since it’s mostly beer that you can’t buy nor will you sample again elsewhere,” says one of the organizers, Shane Walters.

The homebrewers once again are collaborating with some commercial breweries: This year, they did pro-am brews

with Roundabout Brewery, McKees Rocks’ 412 Brewery and Charleroi’s Four

Points Brewing, each of which are serving the brews, too.

Roundabout’s is a farmhouse style ale brewed with Kveik Hornindale yeast with lemongrass and coriander named BUAC Farmhouse. Says Mr. Walters, “We called it this to have people ask what ‘BUAC’ means.”

412 Brewery’s saison, made with Lemondrop hops, is named 412 Lemondrop Like It’s Hot.

With Four Points, they brewed a sour IPA with Enigma hops and added mango and cape gooseberries. It will be available later in cans.

The unlimited sampling of all these beers runs from 6 to 9 p.m. at a new location — the Energy Innovation Center in the Hill District. In addition to more than 100 brews from nearly 40 homebrewers, there will be local mead, cider and rum, plus a lot of food from local eateries, and lots of auction items to bid on to help raise money for the cause.

Tickets are $50, $60 for VIP one-hour-early admission. Get them and more info at brewingupacure.org.
